Is this illegal? or legal?

I am going to use images on my site that I got from google images. Is this legit since it is on google images? The ones that I am using are not "tagged" or has the publishers copywrite info on it. Thanks

I would do your due diligence and check if any need certain rights to reuse. I know you say that they aren't "tagged" but some websites' copyright disclaimers at the bottom of their pages may cover them. If so, I would just look into using stock photos. A quick google search should give you plenty of resources.

I don't know if you are using the option to search for images tagged "allow reuse" but if not, this feature was added in earlier this year. To do this, just click "images" then "advanced options", then at the bottom next to "usage rights" select the appropriate option from the drop-down.

You can also find images specifically for commercial re-use in Yahoo by using their advanced options. Once you search for the image you are looking for, click "more filters" underneath the search results box. This will bring up a drop down list. Check "Creator allows reuse" on the right side.

Of course you can't always trust these, but it helps a bit!

    No.

You need specific permission to use any image.

If you do not have permission to use it... you can't use it.

Google is operating in a grey area where they aren't using the image, they're just finding it for you. That falls into the "fair use" area of copyright law.

You, on the other hand, need to positively confirm that you can reuse the image. If the image owner contacts you and says "I'm going to sue you," you're going to need to go to court and say "this guy said I could use the image for this purpose on this date" and wave a piece of paper. Or you lose.

Don't use Google images because you have to waste time contacting the owners and getting permission etc.

You can get free images from the website sxc

This where I get images to use for my articles. They will have instructions if you have to give credit back to the image owner, how ever you will find a lot where you don't have to.

Otherwise why don't you just buy your own images to use royalty free?

You can buy credits and get them from stockxpert

I usually buy 100 credits for $80, and 100 credits will get you 100 images around 450 x 250 size, which is all you need for the internet.

I still have 20 credits left after a year.

      Good luck

Good point Matt, but I would rather save the $80 and get free images. I only need about 20 max. I'll just do what others suggested and "allow re-use" of google images. So far i have only put about 5 images on my site, that I will check out asap. Thanks for the reply.
