Is Building a List ALWAYS a Good Idea?

I'm new-ish to CPA. I say new-ish because I have been generating leads for a private health insurance deal for about 2 years now, but I'm just starting with CPA Networks.

One thing I keep thinking as I'm looking at a few offers and deciding what to start is, should I be building a list?

This is how I see it: First of all, I think the very nature of CPA is you are building a list for someone. Especially with email submits and stuff like that, but even stuff like what I do where the forms people fill out are bigger, say 5-10 things they need to fill out.

It just seems to me that CPA is a game with small margins (if you are positive at all), and that if done correctly you can significantly put the odds in your favor.

As an example, in my insurance niche I am thinking maybe I need to put together a report on "7 Things you MUST consider when looking for health insurance", and then seeing if I can get 40% (as a goal) of people to opt in for that, and then build a bit of trust, but also be able to send them to an offer for a health insurance quote... and maybe a life insurance quote... and maybe a Pay Day Loan type thing, etc. etc. over time.

Otherwise, I tend to convert around 10% of my visitors, so that means 90% are lost forever in the deep dark abyss.

What do you guys think? Are lists for other business types, or can they strategically be used here too? I'd love to hear from any of you that have done something like this successfully.

In fact, the biggest mistakes some affiliates make is by not building a list.

You build a list of your own, by giving away some valuable stuff. Build a good relationship with the list. You then can send different offers, CPA or other products.

Build a list, offer the visitor something along the way.

List building is ALWAYS good in every niche. I have a publisher who had a list in health niche which he already used for different other offers. Now he is using it for Prozac / Zoloft ($700) offer and start getting conversions.... His investment is ZERO for this campaign.

Now what do you think about List Buliding

Well, it's great if he's building lists via organic or free traffic sources, but if he'd go with paid traffic, list building does cost lots of money, especially in a highly competed niche like health.

Well, i don't think it is that costly because ones you build your list, you can keep making money from that list on long run.. if you have good idea & knowledge of list building and highly converting squeezepage then you can easily build a huge list with less investment.

Good comments guys. I want to add thought that I specifically posted this here in the "CPA" section of the forum because I wanted to see if anyone does this and has success by sending out CPA offers to your list over time... as opposed to sending products to buy and things like that. I know that the latter works, but was unsure if you guys have done so with CPA offers. Thanks.

Ok, cool. Let me try one more time. Is anyone building a list sening CPA OFFERS to the list, instead of digital ebook type products?

I often use the lists that are available on the internet as the list of search engine. It was very beneficial for me because it can make the job easier and faster. A future time, I also will make the list for anyone in need.

I would certainly build a list because you can target your list with multiple offers that are similar to the one that they signed up for. Meaning if they signed up for free iphone offers, don't send them something about health insurance because more then likely they will mark your email as spam to their ISP since they didn't sign up for this type of offer.

Also don't use lists from list brokers or email lists that you find on the internet for three huge reasons.

The first reason and most important is that the list may be old and the emails may not be valid anymore so these emails will cause a hard bounce (terminology for email not being valid) when they reach the ISP that the email subscriber has an account with. If you have to many hard bounces the ISPs may label you as a spammer and cause your emails to go into the spam folder thereby reducing your EPC because the IP address that you are using to send emails to will have a bad reputation and may also eventually get blacklisted.

The second reason for not using an email list from a list broker or that you found on the internet is that the list has probably been so overused other people that your emails will not stand out to the email recipient causing a lower open rate and even lower click through rate which is not what you want.

The third reason not to use such lists, is if the email recipient does not recognize your email and offers they may mark your email as spam to their ISP causing many of the same issues that are mentioned in reason one.

I would certainly build a list that you can retarget multiple times over the long term which will earn you multiple earnings from the same email address but if you want to succeed, build your own list and you will have much higher conversions and EPC when you are sending email marketing campaigns.

The thing about list building is you have the potential to make more than one lead from each email, it can be more of a long term strategy.

    Quick Copywriting Tip:

Make your report title negative and include the word "mistakes" in it. You'll get a much better conversion rate.

For example, "7 Mistakes Most People Make When Purchasing Health Insurance"

Contrary to what most people think, list building is not always a good idea in all niches.

Some niches always respond better with presell. And its difficult to monetize certain demographics.

Test list building against DL and Presell over extended period of time to compare your own EPCs, than decide.

      hope it helps,
      Jay

Also forgot to mention earlier but your email list will have the lower costs and the best conversion ratios which will lead to the highest ROI (if done right) because the email marketing campaigns that you will be sending are very similar to what users have already expressed interest in as they are similar to the type of CPA offers that you have promoted to them in the past and you are also spreading your costs (which are very low) over your entire list instead of trying to continually target new users via PPC campaigns one by one.

I know a company here in Montreal, Canada (Don't ask me for their name as I will not provide it) that targets users via PPC campaigns to built their list for products and then sends them email marketing campaigns. They make on average over $250,000 USD a week from their list that they built over the years.

So yes email list building in the way to go long term.

Who do they use for list building? Custom software they built? or let me guess, not aweber with a list that big

Not everyone is interested in the topic... in fact, it's dull. Despite all that, you get a pretty high click through rate, my friend.

Building a list is always worth while, because it doesn't matter if they're not interested this time around.... when you keep at it? They'll open one of your future emails, when they're ready or in the market again for whatever reason.
