Network charging us for Junk leads

We signed up with what used to be an adnetwork. They said they would work with us on a CPA basis. The CPA for us was a signup to our form for a 30 day free trial of our software. It is a cloud based (SAAS) application on a monthly subscription basis. It is aimed at B2B providers. I was clear on who the target audience was and the kind of people who we were looking to signup. However, after the campaign started we were getting very low quality (junk) signups. These were almost all from two gaming sites, they all were chinese names and they were all yahoo email IDs. There were no valid business names.

They have sent me an invoice for these as well.

If I remember correctly there were a lot of warnings using adnetworks like that anyway since they switch from an manual lead generation (higher quality) to a automated generation system (low quality) after the try-out period.

Oh. I have not come across that. We are using a DSP where we can bring in 3rd party data vendors and in certain adnetworks we can select the sites. We can also do a small test and check the quality. This is a different scenario.

I just tried searching for something like that on the WF and could not find what you were talking about. If you have a link, please provide it so that I can find out more.

So, how should I handle this situation on hand?

It's unlikely you'll hear back from them if you don't pay them. It sounds pretty obvious that it was fraudulent traffic. The only real advice you should be taking is from a lawyer. If you had any written agreement, skype chat, email, etc, bring that along, too.

They are actually a pretty reputed network and have been around for a long time. This is not a fly by night network. However, contract that was signed on was for CPA and not for CPM (an option that they did have). When I asked them about this, they said, they would not be to control who signs up. They also said that they are paying on a CPM basis and we are paying on a CPA basis. Therefore, they are taking the risk. They showed our banners and only those who are interested would click the ads and signup once on the landing page. Therefore, those are valid leads.

This is why you need to specify exact LEAD CRITERIA, as in UK or US only, employed, name, number, etc. Also, if you do a 30 day trial ensure you collect their credit card and charge them after the 30 days. I would then also ensure you ONLY stick to Europe and North America as a test (including Australia). Anything else you should exclude from your CPA criteria for now and it should drastically reduce the amount of junk leads you get.

    Hope that helps,

This is what we are doing. I mean, the geo criteria is US, UK, Canada, Aus. The form only has 4 fields and does not collect job title. It does collect the email, name of business and name of person. The trial lasted for less than 2 weeks. Infact, I think it was only for 10 days and I had to call them up and ask them to pause the campaign.
