With all of the buzz about these social networking sites, it is about time that I use them! Twitter and Facebook look to have tons of potential.

Saying that forums are the best way to get quality backlinks is very, very, VERY brave statement. I am amazed to see how some people here admire someone who posts something like this...

Plus, Facebook Twitter etc. have nofollow attribute on majority of their outgoing links, so mentioning them in terms of SEO is pointless. Yea, Google still considers even nofollow links in certain cases, but even then the value of the link without nofollow tag is gazillion times bigger.

I can agree that Facebook and Twitter are great ways to get traffic, but backlinks no.

      .
I've had amazing traffic boosts from forums, mostly because they were content heavy sites with high PR. A quality link is a quality link.

No follow links count? This is the first I'm hearing about it. The only thing that has been coming out of Google's mounth is that "no follow" add no benefit whatsoever to the search results. At least that's what I thought.

You can check your backlinks just search google for backlink checker. The site listed first (backlinkwatch) will tell you whether or not the backlink is "nofollow" This will let you know which search engines index "nofollow" and from what sites.

I would consider NONE of those as quality links. They are all poor quality links that pass minimal amounts of link juice.

They are all self promotional, self gained with no editorial intervention - how much link juice do you really think the search engines give to those kinds of links? How much weight do they give to links you get yourself? They are getting smarter.

The links that are really worth it it are the opposite of these - the non-self promotional ones that have some editorial discretion in them ... ie the ones that are given because your site is worth it. For eg in the last week, I had had links from news story in the Seattle Times, AOL News and some french paper ... as I had content that they wanted to link to. How many zillions of the self promotional links do you think is needed to match the link juice from those 3 links?

These are the sorts of links that the search engines want us to get ... regardless of what you think of Matt Cutt's, this is what he keeps saying ... so my assumption is that if Google can find a way to give zero value to the sefl promotional links (ie article submission; blog commenting; directory submission; forum posting; etc) without there being too much collateral damage, then they will do it algorithmically.

I argued above that these are NOT quality links. Can you please tell me why you think they are "quality" links?

Forum posting is probably the worst way to get backlinks! I would not waste my time on it.

Think about a backlink from this page of Warrier Forum ... its never going to be above a PR0 ... there are probably over 100 links on the page (header links; footer links; navigation links; breadcrumb links; profile links; thread links; post links; other signature links; etc etc)

So any link on this page of PR0 shared by 100 links means that any one link is worthless in terms of passing any link juice. How can forum posting actually give you a backlink that has any value? (using them for traffic is a different matter).

To obtain quality backlinks, backlinking and forum posting are not enough. You need to do blog commenting too.

Social bookmarking sites are also a great way to build backlinks to your site. By submitting your site, you are sure to be getting a quality backlink to your site without you having the need to reciprocate a link. What is even better is that search engines really love social bookmarking sites as it is considered a vote by people for your site.
