| Update! Go to message #14 to see the first example for you. Hey Warriors! A student of mine asked a good question: "Let's say you have a niche like Elephant Hunting that you know nothing about! How would you go about researching it and deciding what to write about?" Well since we know that's not a real (broad enough) niche, give me some ideas here on a niche YOU would possibly like to enter and I'll try to do a few examples to share on how to research for it for an eBook, etc. Tiff |

Elephant Hunting actually is a very profitable niche, and a perfect example of trying to focus on the obscure. I would have my people interview elephant hunters and suppliers, and also set up a blog. But I think this would be so fascinating so see how else it could be done.

How about golf. I think there is too much competition and all the most searched keywords are spoken for.

How about self-improvement or personal development I've spent months thinking about this one and even own a domain, but can't get my head round it. I've spent today doing keyword research and it is incedibly competetive. |

Thanks for your patience, Warriors – and for giving me some niche ideas you’d like to learn how to research! I’ve done a video (21:22) and txt for your convenience depending on if you prefer to watch or read. One thing I want to point out – when ghostwriting for someone else, if you don’t know a topic enough to be able to write it off the top of your head, factor the research time and resources into your quote. You should get faster at this as you write more. Back when I was only ghostwriting, I remember some of my guru clients offering $100-$500 extra for resources so then I realized I COULD include that! I’d tack that on and go to Barnes and Noble and buy about five $20 paperbacks – usually Dummies Guides and Idiots Guides – they’re PERFECT for topics you don’t know because they’re well laid out and thorough. Then I’d have those resources for future projects, too. Okay so let’s do the first niche idea and later I’ll do the other three you guys suggested last night. Here’s the video and below is the text: Golf This is a very broad, but very profitable niche. It’s also a niche where problem-solution is dominant. EVERY golfer has a problem – even the pros. First, I know golf’s broad so I want to narrow it down a bit so that I can compete better in the marketplace. I use Market Samurai (but you can use Google’s free tool too) and search for 2 or more word phrases for the broad word “golf” using 100 searches per day minimum and 100k or under competing pages and the two that qualify are: Golf tips driving - no Golf driving tips - no Then I go back to MS and type in “golf driving” and get more options: Golf driving lessons – no domain available Golf driving practice – no domain available Golf driving technique – yes domain available Golf driving tips for beginners – yes domain available Golf instruction driving – yes domain available Hitting longer golf drives – yes domain available Longer golf drives – no domain available Tips on golf driving – yes domain available I take these and plug them into Google’s free keyword tool along with the basic “golf driving” phrase to get more options and then keep that list open so I can switch back and forth between Google’s tool and GoDaddy to see if the domain’s available. I listed the ones available above just in case anyone wants to go grab them. They’re all the dot coms. I would gather tons of keywords for a blog and use them daily, but always focus on the same keyword as my domain more than any other. Next I would start spying on competition and existing books to see what’s being sold already on this topic so that I would know what needs to go in there and make my eBook outline from that. Golf eBook Outline: I randomly list keywords I find in spying on the competition. I never cut and paste. Just pick out topics that are covered – like stretches, muscles, etc. After I gather them all (you can see me finding that in the video above), I organize into a logical sequence. Of course you’d stretch before playing, the backswing would come before the follow through, and so on. And you take each topic and research it as if it’s its very own eBook – drill down. So below I did an example of this for the muscles chapter. I quickly discover that shoulders, back, legs, and core are the main ones. So I add those to the outline, then drill down each one of those – take legs, and drill down into calves and thighs. For each one, explain what the muscle is, how it affects your golf drive, and then the solution – how to build it into a better performing muscle for golf. 1.) Stretches 2.) Muscles – better golfing and injury prevention -shoulders -back -legs *calves *thighs -core 3.) Equipment – best driver (brand and models), training equipment – indoor mats 4.) Backswing - Weight shift – shoulder rotation – backswing 5.) Follow through 6.) Drills (balance and power) 7.) Accuracy/Aim – body alignment 8.) Distance Once you flesh it out like this, you should have a very thorough product covering everything that needs to go into this niche topic. After analyzing your outline you could come up with a good title, like I have listed below the outline topics: 8 Tips on Golf Driving for Better Distance and a Lower Handicap From this point, you do the writing! Remember – NEVER cut and paste and rewrite. EDUCATE yourself and write from scratch. If you need reminders, just jot down a few keywords and that should spur your mind. More to come later on: Self-improvement Natural relief for serotonin disorders Career Advice Tiff PS – If I’ve missed something or you have more questions, please ask here and I’ll cover it in the next example! |

Wow, this is great. Sorry I missed the opportunity to suggest a niche, but since my sister and her husband are busy building a golf academy, this might be an interesting niche to create a product around... Regardless, sure appreciate the break down. One question: How much time does it "cost" a newbie to pull together a list like this (I imagine you are way quicker on the fly for any topic tossed out there than I would be -- yet I also anticipate gaining momentum once I start). Plus, do you have any advice for people (like me) who are limited in the research dept.? I live in a non-English speaking country so grabbing a Dummies guide or three is kind of difficult (I can read it in non-English and understand, but then if the niche is very specific, I am struggling with the special words -- driver is an English golf term, no idea what that is called in my language here... or in the English language often the latin words for the muscles is common knowledge (gluts being the short form of glutemous maximus) -- in my language this is not the case, where the latin is avoided like the plague.) --> How heavily can I rely on online resources? What kinds of indicators let me know that I should order something from amazon.com? Don't know if you can answer that second question, but perhaps someone reading this thread can. Thanks again, Andrea |

| I have several niches which are exceedingly interesting but difficult to collect reliable information on. Here are the niches which interest me the most: 1) The medicinal uses of the Mandrakes in different cultures. 2) The cultural significance of the color red in Slav culture. 3) The common features of Siberian Shamanism and Native American Shamanism |

Tiffany, this is great stuff. I've always struggled with writing coherently. Oh, I would eventually get my college writing assignments done, but at great cost to my sanity and that of those near me. The way you organize the information before you ever sit down to write is priceless! Thank you.

You are so 'spot on!' as the Brits say. I wanted to remind you that for an quick way to find domains use your Market Samurai domain module. Of course, I realize you need to do it the slow way if you don't have MS. This feature is really handy and a big time saver. |

This one was a little harder. It’s a broad niche too – but one where people are often broke and seeking free advice. Watch the video (35:56) here and/or read how I do it below: Career Advice Okay with the career advice niche, you could be talking about how to GET a career or how to CHANGE a career or how to make the current career work better for you. Lots of options. So first I use Market Samurai and look for 2 or more word phrases using a base phrase “career advice” with at least 100 searches per day and 100k or under competing phrase match pages. I get these phrases back: cv example – 3,616 searches per day, >93,300 competing phrase pages career aptitude test – 2,433 searches per day, >59,600 competing phrase pages cv help – 325 searches per day, >29,600 competing phrase pages careers in finance – 266 searches per day, >79,200 competing phrase pages career websites – 217 searches per day, >61,100 competing phrase pages And I’m not happy with any of these. The career aptitude test is primarily for kids, college and high school students, etc. Finance is too specific, and career websites would sound like it’s intending to lead you elsewhere. So I go back to MS. I type in the word “career” by itself Now I get some good ideas back: career builders – 1,627 searches/day, >70,900 competing phrase pages what career is right for me – 730 searches/day, >20,300 competing phrase pages – dot net is available and it’s good – lots of searches and low competition pages! career websites – 217 searches/day, >61,100 competing phrase pages good careers – 325 searches/day, >68,900 competing phrase pages career personality test – 266 searches/day, >20,100 competing phrase pages Then I started creating my eBook outline and order it in a logical order and flesh the chapters out as I’ve done on the first two – keep drilling until it’s exhausted: What Career Is Right for Me (eBook Outline ![]() Which Stage of a Career Are You Seeking? -First career -Career change *why do you dislike current career – is it field, boss, pay, etc? *can you network yourself into a new job? *are you willing to step down the ladder to get on a new path? -College Graduates Factors That May Help Identify the Best Job for You -Men -Women – go to Google and type in Best Careers for Women and bookmark several websites like this: 25 best-paying jobs for women - CNN -Age – again, bookmark resources to help you educate yourself like this: 25 best-paying jobs for women - CNN -Ethnicity Passion (what’s missing?) Natural talent versus learned skills Stepping Stone àDream job Reason for transition – Money? Happiness? Health? Location? Commitment and requirements – time, skills, experience Researching a New Job - job growth? Money? Advancement? Types of jobs – social, artistic, enterprising, etc. Full versus part time versus Seasonal This is where the solution of the eBook is offered: Learning New Skills for a New Career Personality test Belief in yourself Hidden strengths – unlock potential -organization -time management – finding out - do you have it? If not, how to get it! -flexibility -initiative Bonus items? Resume/CV Interviews Tiff |

Everyone's different. Depends on how fast you read, etc. I personally don't even add research into project cost because I'm so fast. But I didn't start out that way - initially I'd spend 2 days minimum researching. LOL! Then I got adept at knowing what I needed to pick and choose. Just takes practice. Pricing - I'd do it by time. What's your hour worth? Tiff | |

Tiffany, you are so incredible and down to earth - but more importantly, your info is shared quite freely and with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. I would love to have joined some of your programs/courses, but I am still in the red, having spent more $$ than I've taken in -- which is a paltry, laughable amount. And I have been unemployed since April 2009. Still, I'm studying all the time and determined to get it right. Thank you for contributing to my education.

Tiff, It's so helpful to take a peek behind the scenes of how a pro handles research, and transforms the research into a product. And your insights about charging for research/resources put me at ease. I got my first writing client a week ago and I was unsure about adding in costs for research time. Thanks for sharing! |
