Hey Warriors, Google just released an update that will affect double the amount of searches than the Panda update! Here's the article: Google says it is introducing a new search algorithm that it says will make search results "fresher." The change is a sweeping one – some 35% of all searches will be impacted, which is more than double the impact felt by Panda, Search Engine Land notes. This algorithm changes builds on the Caffeine web indexing system Google introduced last year. Searches that will be impacted include: Recent events or hot topics. Searches for current events will pull up more high-quality pages that might only be minutes old. Regularly recurring events. Some events take place on a regularly recurring basis. "Without specifying with your keywords, it's implied that you expect to see the most recent event, and not one from 50 years ago," Google says. Frequent updates. There are also searches for information that changes often, but isn’t really a hot topic or a recurring event, such as data about a new type of camera. One of Several Changes Google has introduced a number of changes to search in recent weeks, which are adding up to a big cumulative affect. It recently began encrypting searches and outbound clicks. It also introduced a change to Panda, with little notice to search marketers. Source: MarketingVox |

Yea, knowing about these updates early on allows you to watch your metrics closely and create some controlled test environments so you can try and determine what's happening. Then of course make the appropriate changes to stay ahead of the game.

the 35% number is pretty freaky but I think this will only effect niches that have Google News as a prominent highly ranked listing anyway. Sucks if you rank for "plane crash" but shouldn't hurt you if you rank for "golf swing". Plus who knows if this update will be permanent. Google tends to lately be pulling things out of the oven too early, never to have them make it from the counter to the dinner table (?) lol |

Bare in mind that the algo change only affects some searches and theres nothing in there about crawling your sites more often and deeper for updates. that still seems to depend on links and updating content for even those searches.

The SERPs that have Google News results are the main source of keywords that this will impact, the other 65% nothing changes. Personally I don't care about Google News type keywords. | |

While that's interesting and we'll see how it pans out, I was more interested in Google indexing Facebook comments. Google To Index Facebook Comments As Search Results Let's talk about what that might mean? |

Kind of uncomfortable with the idea of google indexing facebook comments, that just seems more like a huge invasion of privacy. But yeah, I wonder how this effect people. |

| Only if your privacy settings in Facebook allows public access...so therefore...no invasion of privacy...you already opened the door. Google cannot crawl through closed doors protected by passwords.

Thanks for the heads up! This is only one more reason to always diversify and update your internet marketing strategies. Many website owners only are "hot" from the start, and then leave the page to gather dust after a few months. After some time, they would go back again and update the site, and then forget it again. This approach doesn't work, especially with Google's new update! |

I know Google has 65% of the market - but I wouldn't mind seeing them slip a little more. I've always ranked faster in Yahoo and Bing - and where is the facebook search engine? The New York Times piece on this makes Google sound..well, frankly a little desperate. ( I know, I know - 65%) |

This only goes to show that Google is not the most reliable thing to build your business on, as it's always changing. I get almost all of my traffic from social sites, even starting to get a bit from Google Plus. I have heard recently that social signals, especially Google Plus Ones are becoming a lot more important in rankings.

Back in 2009, I decided not to rely on Google for my main source of traffic. It was very hard for a while but now I have some decent traffic even if Google introduce Panda, Puma or Hipo updates... I always hated companies having the monopoly and Google have made some of the warriors suffer so much that at some point we all need to find alternative ways. You can be great at SEO and in time all your hard work can be taken away. So, here are a few free traffic resources to consider. Fiverr (Read my thread here on this) Article Marketing Local advertising Flyers at Universities-Companies etc Radio and even some local TV channels. |

One of the keywords I track/chase now gets a News results sitting at #2 - instead of my site. The keyword has never had News in the results previously and the news it is returning is irrelevant fluff. A bit of a bummer. Anyone else seen News being shoe-horned into your results now? |
