I've got an aged keyword rich domain, great content, all the best plugins. Now what is the best backlink strategy?

Blog commenting?
EDU/GOV?
Manual submission?
Articles?
BMR?
Scrapebox?
seNuke?
Drip Fed?
Do follow/No follow

Everyone seems to have an answer but of course everyone wants you to purchase their backlink services.

I would like to know, from someone that is actually on page 1 for a medium or high competition keyword, the best backlink strategy.

Some of what you are asking about is black hat. Black hat is high risk/short term high reward. I say short term because, unless it is well hidden, black hat will quickly be spotted; and your site will be banished to search engine purgatory.

As far as your strategy for advancing your site, use every method you can to promote it, short of black hat. To get to number one, you need to do more than anyone else. So, do everything you can, and hope it is enough. Get your site in top shape and regularly post. After about a week of no posts, your SE rating takes a dive.

I would consider guest posts and interviews also.

I would have to agree with David. Some are BH and would not include them. However the best policy for backlinking number 1 is diversity. Then consistency. Google likes to see backlinks that are natural.

One of the best guides I have found for a good solid backlinking strategy is from Pat Flynn. His website is crammed with good content and strategies btw.

It seems everyone these days has a strategy, but you have to do what works for you and your specific niche. Some are more competitive than others.

You need a diverse portfolio of back links using virtually all the method you already mentioned above to emerge on the first top.

      I don't, John!

Hearing the words "backlink diversity" makes me want to reach for my headphones to protect myself from it. People who talk in forums about "backlink diversity" are often trying to use that concept as a purported justification for the inclusion of low-relevance links and/or poor quality links (which often just happen to be what they themselves sell, of course), on the totally erroneous and spurious grounds that it will somehow "look natural" to Google and that that will somehow be a "good thing".

Or that "Google might change their minds next year ..." (in spite of proclaiming the opposite) " ... and it's essential to be covered for all possible contingencies".

None of that matches any of my experience, any of the experience of others I know and trust, any of the experience of "SEO people" whose opinions I trust, or any of the advice given in the up-to-date editions SEO textbooks I've read, at all. Nor does any of it match "logic" or "reason". :p

I often find quite low-PR pages which have small numbers of high-quality, highly relevant backlinks only (read "very little diversity") at the top of Google for competitive keywords, and I know that those sites, with high quality SEO only, can be very hard to dislodge ... while other sites with much wider diversity are a piece of cake to overtake.

Call me a skepchick, but I think "backlink diversity" is often nonsense. As far as I can make out, all the people who care about it are selling backlinking software, services or information which almost always relate (on the relevance scale) to the "lower end" of the much-espoused "diversity" - in other words, they need some sort of ostensible justification, for people to buy them.

You don't need ANY of the methods you've mentioned.

Some of them are erroneous and only even mentioned because people sell services for them.

    Here's some advice for free:

1 - Think about who your target audience is.
2 - Think about what their problem/need/desire is.
3 - Think about what you most want them to do when they find your site.
4 - Create some pre-selling copy and a clear proposition that ties-in their need and your most wanted action from them.
5 - Do some research into which terms they are searching with and which sites are currently giving them what they will find and want.
6 - Check out any newsworthy events, people and information that will be of interest to them and that you can create a connection to your proposition from. (think along the lines of you are selling life coaching and Tiger Woods is having relationship problems and it's in the news - you create some content which covers how life coaching could've had him living a balanced life and never run into those problems, but could also help him put things into perspective and regain his life as fast and easily as possible)
7 - Create a short report that hits the biggest interest areas of your target audience.
8 - Write some press releases about the major benefits of your products/services and how they relate to the newsworthy items your research came up with (you can be very creative here and ALWAYS have a lot to say)
9 - Create some short videos and articles which highlight and briefly cover main areas of interest to your target audience.
10 - create a plan for constant content creation and publishing. it's ok to reuse content and turn an article into a short video and use your new content to create press releases (i.e new video exposes how to live a happy life), so that you always have content waiting to go out.
There are many tools which will let you schedule content publishing (you can even just create draft posts in Wordpress and just publish them when the time is right), so you can easily systemise and automate a lot of things ( think rss sharing, social bookmarking, press release publishing, video distribution, article publishing etc. etc.)
    11 - Work your plan.

If all you do is create regular press releases, videos and content but effectively distribute/publish it - you don't need any of the things in your list.

The biggest tool you need is your brain and to plan your strategy.

Ehm.... I am hoping you are not going to refute the idea and make me cringe at yet another post on the subject. Why do so many people struggle with such a simple concept?:rolleyes:

I am just a beginner, but the only strategy I use is buying backlinks. I've been on other forums for several years and people keep repeating "article submission", "social networks" and "blog commenting" like parrots. But experts with reputation and high post counts contradict and say that stuff doesn't work, meaning the only two REAL ways are 1) buying them 2) developing great content so people link to you naturally
Right or wrong, those are the two I am concentrating on at the moment.

      Wrong!

You have to buy good links.

You need to stop listening to everyone else and use your brain.

There are a LOT of ways to get excellent valuable links for free that are nothing to do with blog commenting, article marketing etc.....

The "best" option is to use all of them.

It doesn't mean it's the most EFFICIENT.

Do what you need to do to do rank, it will always be relative to your market.
