This question is asked on a daily basis.

That said, I personally go with the Google Keyword Tool (Free) + Traffic Travis (Free) + Calc (Free) to sort the data.

You save some time by using Keeyword in the sorting process.

Thats the question I have of almost every third party keyword tool I see out there. It seems all they do is recreate the adwords tool. Shucks I 'd be happy if a keyword tool just showed me in one interface the top ten sites ranking for a keyword, what they are targeting on page title and the PR and even a link to a hundred of their top links.

To this date the best I can get is going to the adwords tool with seoquake installed so I can click on the serp for that keyword and see what the front page looks like competition wise. Instead of that these tools try to sell me on some competition rating that is wrong half if not more of the time.

I used many different softwares for keyword research, however the best are in my opinion Traffic Travis (ease of use), Rank Tracker (the analysis of datas is rich and professional) and Market Samurai (even free version is good, very efficient user interface).

Market Samurai is a flaming POS. Cannot believe people still use that.

Google Keyword Tool and then SpyGlass, OSE, Ahrefs, or Majestic to analyze the backlinks of the top 3 sites. That is all you need.

We've gone through all of the best tools and this is what we use for maximum efficiency.

Using Ultimate Niche Finder, we create huge lists of keywords, up to 10,000-30,000. Then we sort/filter them by whatever means. Whether they include a specific word in them, local monthly search, CPC, Adwords competition (or OCI by UNF). Then just continue expanding/filtering/cropping keywords until you have a large refined list. We stop at about 1,000 keywords. Evaluate the competition, and make a list of the 'very easy - easy'.

Evaluate the very easy/easy keywords in market samurai/Traffic Travis. Pick out these that seem easy by MS/TT standards.

Inspect the backlink profile with Scrapebox using the linkdomain site operator. Check the PR, and OBL of each of the competiting pages backlinks.

Check the domain of the page using Open Site Explorer.

Lastly, manually view the page in the SERP; make sure no shopping or image results show up at the top. Check the on-page SEO of the page, and most importantly, ask yourself if you can create a page with higher quality content than that page.

It's a huge checklist we go through (you can see it in detail here along with how we use the tools), but this is the best way to completely dissect your competition from head to toe.

Google keyword tool and your brain. I have Ultimate Niche Finder and Market Samurai and others but when I type popcorn and so does the next 500 people we get the same results.

If you can understand how to find niches people don't think about - or how to go from a large niche everyone knows about into a subniche that people don't know so much about then you can really find some golden nuggets.

I've only used Market Samurai and Google keyword tool. MS is good, but buggy. It runs on Adobe Air which seems unstable. They send out updates for the program daily, and features of the program break a lot. But it can be somewhat valuable to have around.
