Only change in the SERP I have noticed so far has been some secondary keywords that were way down the ranking creeping up a bit. Not even sure if related

My experience exactly. One of the site was hit badly by EMD update and its traffic was slashed by 75%. Now it is back at 50% so some positive movement but not on primary keywords that matched EMD.

I love how they don't like ads above the fold... as if each SERP didn't have "ads above the fold"

Tis a funny thing how off base each department is from each other at G@@gle. SEO department wreaks havoc on people with ads above the fold, @dsense department sends experts out to most major cities and tells publishers the best places to place ads to monetize there sites and they seem to go against what the seo depart. tells you. Also puts it on there Google help docs. Adwords tells you that you CAN send paid traffic via Google to adsense monetized sites, but "they really dont like it" but adsense will send you vouchers all year telling you to run adwords to your site.

      Trick or treat

        Very well put mate

I mean it's their game and their rules obviously but the contradictions really make you laugh.

In the end, it's like, "Ads are OK, as long as they're on our properties".

Google isn't trying to rank their SERPs, so this comment, which gets repeated often, is entirely irrelevant.

One thing I thought of.. how do they know it is an ad if it isn't one of theirs or perhaps a mainstream service? Could perhaps be one of the advantages of not using Adsense...

They have guidelines for all advertisements. Dont think that they will not detect you if you use chitika or anyother ads in the world. They know that it is ad even the simple adblock plus addon of mozilla knows about every kind of ad and so is google.

Sorry mate you lose your advantage

They are pushing all the updates so soon just to make it messy for the people to figure out which update screw them. May be a strategy to take down people doing spamming instead of SEO.

There hasn't been an update yet that hasn't helped me, so if they want to do more.. then by all means please do more. I am starting to see some increase dancing on my business related keywords, my gaming site seems to be holding steady at present.

Yep and related to the update, I never get to concerned what caused the increases just as long as things are moving in the right direction

Yep I've seen some lead gen sites drop in rankings, where everything above the fold is a huge quote input field thing.

Not completely tanking though, more like losing a few spots up until a few pages.

While I am not effected by this.. as I think about it though it would be pretty easy to avoid. You just need to wrap your ads in a piece of code to check who is viewing the page, if googlebot.. don't show the ad. Have to do it on the server of course...but easy enough.

Does this apply to Adsense sites only? I normally work with Amazon type sites and normally have an image in the top left of the content linked to Amazon. Should that link be removed?

It's about all forms of advertising which push the content below the fold, not just Adsense.
