Google Adwords - "Sponsored Promotions" in Gmail?

I have been noticing this for months and have been searching far and wide for any additional information about a certain type of ad in Gmail that opens up in a person's inbox. I'm sure that these types of ads are part of Adwords but I can't find out anything else.

I just stumbled on more ads. I've previously seen ads from Vistaprint and an online gaming website. Today, I saw an ad from BuyCostumes.com.

It seems like this would be an awesome way to build a huge list because people are logged in to their email.

If you know what I'm talking about and you know more than me, please feel free to contribute.

This is a beta program that's currently open to only very large advertisers. I've tried to get in on it but no go yet.

That's what I figured. For some reason, it seems like Google selected and approached those companies for the beta testing.

I can see warriors jumping all over that type of Gmail ad. If Google does decide to move past the beta phase, I can see it getting saturated VERY quickly.

I think it's for anybody that uses the display network
to advertise on. I could be wrong. Been wrong many times.

I believe there is also a setting to add gmail as a managed
        placement.

But I will agree that one might never get on
there without being a "good" player, or if one were
actually bidding on gmail, that the cost would quite
        high.

I read somewhere, but like I said, I can't remember everything
from it, that you can bid on placement too.
