Hey guys as I go further down the rabbit hole of affiliate marketing it's easy to get lost with the amount of information on the net in regards to a simple yet effective backlink building strategy, I can build sites and they seem to do ok in the SERPS but I am looking to better my backlink building skills, can anyone shed some light on a good method? What links do you build first? Web2.0s or forum posts etc? Any input would be highly appreciated thanks!

Get SEOspyglass & research high ranking domain/pages backlink profiles. They have a free trial version that shows approx. 1,100 links. Take some time & learn how to use the software for comp. link profile research. That will get you started.

Forum links are junk for SEO.

Web 2.0s are junk without existing strong links pointing at them.

Ok well I have SEO Quake on Firefox that shows me the pr of sites within google, is it a good idea to use the keyword:"powered by Wordpress" "leave a comment" command to weed out high pr blogs to comment on?

If you are looking for high pr blogs for blog comment then should visit Technorati. It is the best blog directory and high PR blogs are listed there that can be searched by category.

  • I agree with the simple strategy of reverse engineering the backlinks of the top 10 competitors for any keyword. Use SEOSpyGlass to discover their backlinks, sort them by page rank and try to secure backlinks to your site from the same sources.

This is a fairly white hat, Google proof strategy as you are just leveraging the same backlinks that all the top 10 sites used to earn their page 1 rankings.

Thanks guys looks like I'm going to take a peek at SEO spyglass! Also I have done a bit of backlink checking before and a lot of the backlinks I have found appear to be contextual links with no apparent way of me placing a link anywhere, is there any tips on how to do this? Harry

You've found that particular method isn't going to work so now it's time to take a different route. Try getting you hands on some properties with PR and good link juice so that you can put your own contextual links on them.
