The Four Steps of Email List Building
I know that experienced Internet Marketers may already know the four steps of email list building, but there may be some aspiring online entrepreneurs who would appreciate hearing about the basics.
Most marketers know that the main reason for building an email list is so you can keep your prospects and website visitors in your marketing funnel. One of the challenges of marketing online is the fact that most people who visit your site will not buy anything, so you need a way to stay in touch with them after they are gone.
Your email list serves this purpose and there are ways to automate the process so you don’t have to actually build and maintain the list yourself.
Here is the outline:
1. Sign up for an Autoresponder service: GetResponse and AWeber are two popular ones. I have always used GetResponse and I recommend it.
A good autoresponder service will collect and maintain your subscriber information and will send out pre-scheduled messages for you. It also lets you send updates to members of your list whenever you want.
2. Offer an Incentive to encourage people to subscribe: Many marketers offer a newsletter series, or an eBook or training course or some similar resource directly related to the topic or theme of their website. It should be something related to your business and of obvious value to the visitor.
3. Place Opt-In Forms on your website: It is recommended to put opt-in forms on every page of your website. Most forms ask only for the person’s first name and email address. Keep it simple.
4. Promote your email list: Use whatever means you feel comfortable with to promote and advertise your list – blog posts, social networking, lead capture pages, traffic exchanges, etc. – and let your targeted prospects know that if they sign up for your list, they will receive a valuable incentive(s).
In a nutshell, that’s it. Obviously, each step requires some additional information, but that is the basic outline covering the four steps of email list building. I’ve included a few more details in a similar blog post, How to Build an Email List, on my website.
