E-Commerce Leverage for a Small Business Online

Many small and medium businesses, both offline and online, are aware of the great opportunity to sell their products to customers around the world via the Internet, but they don’t know how to take advantage of the e-commerce potential for their small business online.

It is one thing to register a domain name for a business, sign up for website hosting and then put up a website. It can be quite another for many small business operators to know the ins-and-outs of the e-commerce process.

E-commerce involves buying and selling products and services over the Internet. Big companies spend a lot of money setting up a full service e-commerce site to market and sell their products. Small and medium businesses do not have the same budget, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still get involved. There are ways to leverage the e-commerce potential of the World Wide Web.

Professional e-commerce sites typically include a virtual storefront where products are listed and featured, a “shopping cart” where the shopper places selected items before they are ready to complete the transaction, and an order processing section, commonly called a “checkout”, where the total cost of the order is added up, taxes and shipping charges added in, and the shopper is given a variety of payment methods to choose from.

A small business online with only a few products to sell may not need a full e-commerce site of their own. Likewise, home-based affiliate marketers might be able to get by using the sales pages and order processing systems provided by the affiliate marketing company supplying the products.

On the other hand, a small or medium business with a wider range of products might want to research the available e-commerce services and providers to find one that fits their needs and their budget.

One additional piece of the e-commerce puzzle that must also be taken into consideration is the “marketing” aspect. You can pay for the finest e-commerce website that money can buy, but little is going to happen on that site until it is marketed effectively to attract potential customers. Drawing targeted traffic is one of the challenges facing small and medium businesses that want to develop an online presence.

The site owner must also factor in the time it takes to monitor and maintain the website. Large companies can afford dedicated staff to deal with those responsibilities. A small business operator may not have that option or flexibility.

One alternative to setting up your own e-commerce site is to list your products on an existing one that has a proven system and a good reputation in the industry. Sites and services like this can be found by searching online, but be sure to check them out carefully before listing your products.
