Writing Copy For An Internet "Guru" ...

I recently participated in the promotion of Joel Comm's launch for his book, Click Here To Order (http://clickheretoorderbook.com). This book that went to #16 on Amazon on launch day. I thought others might be interested in my experience.

How did I get the job?

Well, first I had to get the attention of the right people. There are many ways to get someone's attention.

Here's what I did: I compiled a list of marketers who I knew hired copywriters (or if I didn't know for sure, at least they were good prospects due to the number of promotions they put out) and sent a snail mail letter offering my services as a copywriter.

You read that right, a postal mail letter.

Get this: I didn't even follow through. I had originally intended to follow up the letters with a phone call, and I got busy and did not do it. Regardless, Infomedia's president, Ken Burge, contacted me and we hammered out a deal for me to write the copy.

I gotta tell you, writing the copy was a great experience. It was very enjoyable working on copy for true marketing professionals. I can't say enough good about Joel and his team at Infomedia.

It was extremely cool seeing all the hoopla surrounding the launch and knowing that a ton of people would see my copy. Some big name marketers even used my email copy, so it must have been okay, at least!

(Just to be clear, a "team approach" was used on the copy and therefore not all of the final copy was mine.)

If any copywriters out there are interested in doing what I did (not writing for Joel specifically, but for any successful marketer), I offer the following advice.

* Get good first, and make sure you can deliver.

How do you know if you're ready? I'll suggest two possibilities.

One method is to operate your own sites and get a lot of experience testing and tracking and you know you can write copy that converts.

Another is to get a good copywriting mentor and keep working with them until they say you're ready to go out and get clients.

* Get the attention of whomever you want to work for.

I sent out a postal letter because I knew that Joel (and the other marketers I targeted) receive a ton of emails. By sending a postal letter, I stood apart from copywriters who only sent emails to offer their services.

How will you get attention? It's really up to you: what image you want to present, and who you're targeting. You might introduce yourself at a live event or participate in forums where your targets also participate.

* Work like mad once you've landed the job.

Once you have a gig with one of these guys (or gals), do whatever you can to get the job done right and on time.

If it's your goal to write copy for one of the top online marketers, please, for your own sake, don't simply copy what I did. I encourage you to figure out what unique qualities and benefits you have to offer and find ways to communicate your message to your target audience.

Good luck to you!
