When you think you're gorgeous you write better copy

I mean, for example just take a look at me...

I'm so dashingly handsome I have beautiful women swooning at my feet all day long.

What can I say? Modestly so, it's simply true.

It's why I'm a genius at what I do.

Fact. If you don't think you're gorgeous, you've got a major problem on your hands. Never forget this little known copywriting secret from the masters of print ads. It's true.

And blondes, well, what can I say?

They're the best copywriters of all.

Split testing has proved this beyond any shadow of doubt.

Just ask Rick Duris. He'll confirm it. Won't you Rick?

An interesting read about Shirley Polykoff the copywriter behind the Clairol hair ads. Shirley Polykoff (for those of you who don't know) was one of the highest paid ad writers of the 1950's and 1960's.

In that case Mark, you need to replace your avatar with a picture of yourself .

On a slightly more serious note, I think this goes beyond just looks and that your entire self-image, self-esteem and confidence play a huge part in your ability.

Henry Ford summed it up with "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right".

      Exactly my point Andrew.

What I wrote about myself above was of course parody.

Taking the mickey out of myself. Satirical. Piss taking...

      ...poking fun at myself.

But like you quite rightly state, in this business in order
to write good copy you need high self esteem. In order
to believe in yourself. In order to believe and know you
      can personally deliver.

Thank you for getting it Andrew. Good on you my man.

If anyone else has an opinion on this please feel free to
chirp in an opinion or two or three.

      Cheers!

I have to agree with Andrew. I don't think self image matters in the sense of physical beauty as much as self confidence matters -- that you really believe yourself that you have what it takes to write great copy, regardless of what you look like physically.

I'd agree with Mark and Andrew - self-confidence is definitely needed.

    Also needed:

Copywriting education, along with copywritng experience, lest heads go kablooey (as Clayton Makepeace so amusingly wrote in his Use the Force, Luke! posting).

The ability to think like a consumer, as Shirley Polykoff said.

The ability to understand the consumer and what makes him/her tick.

    Endless curiosity.

The ability to exhaustively research the subject at hand.

The ability to ruthlessly kill your darlings, in the interest of better copywriting.

The ability to understand why the most effective ads work the way they do, and why copy/paste plagiarism will seldom, if ever, work well.

The ability to meet deadlines, and work like you mean it, even when working from a home office.

The ability to know the difference between being busy and being productive.

The ability to just drop everything and go do something else - and still be working.

But above all - the quiet confidence and competence that comes with all having of the above. You could be homeless and ugly, standing on a street corner with a cardboard sign, and still make a good living because it would be a really good sign.

That's really funny, Mark. Now I think I just need a new pair of silk stockings and I'll be ready to roll.

I wholeheartedly believe that without confidence, you have no business sitting down at the computer, getting paid gobs of money to produce converting copy, when you aren't feeling ridiculously confident about yourself...

I had put a thread up in the mindset section a long time ago about this: http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...confident.html

    But the bottom line is...

You have to be frickin' in love with yourself (and I don't mean vanity) to produce the kind of results that are worthy of you and your client's time.

    Period.

    End of conversation.

And whatever you need to do to get into the mind-space, do it.

I don't care if visiting a gentleman's club makes it happen...

...just remember to bring lots and lots of $1's.
