I'm needing some "joint health" / "arthritis" controls for the senior health market anyone? Thanks so much

    Controls are the version of your sales letter that outperformed every previous version in response (sales).

    For example, when a company hires me to beat the control, they are paying me to write an ad for them that makes more sales than their current best.

    ONE of the better bets on getting a control is AARP magazine for last year and see repeated ads. It is expensive to test in AARP.

    Then, golf mags, with long running "arthritis" ads.

    How about a magalog? Tons of those out there. TV ads?

    See, we don't have enough information from you.

    Which media will be tested? What is the budget? Which will determine media.

    USPS mail? Where is the list from?

    AMWAY has been selling Nutrilite supplements for decades...by face to face catalogs.

    I've helped developed two different joint supplements which have run full page ads in national pubs, one a very technical Doctor's pitch with several graphics...and they worked great but cost a bundle.

    And one was sold via a self mailer and insert.

    So, to be of any real help to you, give us some information so we can give you experienced guidance, OK?

    @Laura - I have kick butt controls and I like her shes awesome. Only problem is her controls are like magazines!!! I even began to re-write some of her controls and I was like GOOD GRIEF these are long!! LOL - Maybe I need to revisit those.

    @gjabiz - I'm doing direct mail to a number of lists via USPS. So what I want is a recent letter that did well. My concern is this - with all the "magalog" letters going out that are almost magazines, is the traditional letter doomed to fail? I guess you would have to have some pretty powerful copy to even compete no? I mean a simple benefit headline in a traditional sales letter seems to me is doomed to fail?

    Hoping to see some recent controls that used traditional style. Follow me?

      OK, thanks. That gives some information.

      Your target market is "seniors", correct? How are they segmented?

      By age, area, sex or are they lists of buyers?

      Your list broker or the lists themselves will tell you what media was used. If it is a compiled list, good luck, just MY opinion, they aren't worth your time.

      One segment we sold to was Senior Golfers, in warm climes, and then broke it into men and women with totally different offers.

      Continuity is the quick way to riches, get them on the ol auto ship program, and FREE has been proven a winner.

      What you are looking for will be difficult to find, unless you get the results of the letter too...not to many marketing companies with current controls are willing to give up that information to a potential competitor.

      You may be able to test 100 at a time for some results, although most lists will require you to rent a substantial number.

      If you have a list of buyers, who have recently purchased (a hot list) you can match the promotion (somewhat) to what was mailed.

      I seriously doubt you'll see some recent controls, why would anyone reveal this info?

      As to the question re powerful copy, no, it just has to be targeted correctly and resonate with the person receiving it. A good chance they have been exposed to scores of ads hawking supplements...your letter, offer and whatever elements you are going to use have to be different enough to

      get opened
      get read
      acted upon immediately...

      and probably should have a FREE offer to "qualified" readers.

      Yeah they are part of your costs to get the first sale.

      You just add up all your costs and work back as to the requires response needed to cover your costs.

      To lower your loss risk, you'd look to have a upsell at first sale,
      then look at locking in continuity or bigger sales after.
