Analyses of Classic Ads

I've spent the last couple of hours reading over some of Gary Halpert's suggested classic ads ("How to Burn Off Body Fat", "Why Men Crack", for example). They're good, obviously, and I do in fact find myself compelled to read them once I get started. But I'd really like to see some of them analyzed so I could get a feel for the tactics/techniques/thought processes the authors were using when they created them. Searching has not brought any results; just wondering if anyone here knows of a treasure trove of analysis somewhere.

Analysis and critiques of ads are usually paid products. But there a few free ones around.

Michel Fortin at one time had a free video critique of an ad on his blog: Copywriting And Direct Response Marketing Consulting By Michel Fortin and The Success Doctor, Inc.

And Chris Haddad had a few on his: The Hard-Working Words Blog

Not sure if they're still available, though. I couldn't find them with a quick search.

There's Million Dollar Mailings by Denny Hatch:

Amazon.com: Million Dollar Mailings...Amazon.com: Million Dollar Mailings...

It doesn't offer particularly deep analysis, but gives you a basic insight into why Denny feels certain ads were successful. And there are short interviews with some of the writers offering their thoughts on their work.

Also Lawrence Bernstein of Info Marketing Blog occasionally offers swipe file packages of writers likes Eugene Schwartz and Mel Martin with his analysis of their writing styles.

Lastly, Jason Fladlien was selling a collection of Halbert ads that he'd provided video commentary for but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. I'd imagine he ran into legal trouble, might still be worth Googling for though.

Thanks guys. Here's one I found for Gary Halbert's (sorry for the mis-spell above) "Water" ad done by the author himself:

  • Jgrink- Russ Bowring has his original Stripped Naked Sales Letter in the War room which breaks down a sales letter with notes and commentary. Or you can spring for the current version here (no affil): http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...than-ever.html

Marketing is not a battle of products. It is a battle of perceptions.
