    Necessity.

I recognized the importance of great copy (something which I'm still shocked many on this forum and elsewhere don't get) and realized that NO ONE was going to care about writing copy for my products as much as I do, so learning to produce compelling copy was one of the most valuable things I could do for myself.

That then snowballed into working for others as well as myself, and watching it pay off has made me fall even deeper in love with the bizarre art/science behind crafting ads that make people buy.

      Well said Luke.

I did this brief video about 8 years ago. You can see how young I looked then.

Thanks for sharing your insight Ray. It's true, you do look more distinguished in your profile picture... but that's a good thing in this business I think.

In fact, I read a story from an advertising exec. who credited his success at a young age to the fact he was graying and balding by thirty.

I like the point you made about having the freedom to live and travel where you want while maintaining your income and lifestyle.

Also, you made a good point about courses selling the end goal of making six figures in your underwear shooting off an email and glossing over the years of dedicated honing of your chops it takes to get to that point.

What's your favorite benefit of living the life of a copywriter?

I think my favorite part is hat you don't need any expensive
tools, location or funding to start. All the tools are between your
ears and you don't need a certificate from anyone to say you
are good at what you do because you can prove it by just
driving traffic to your words and see the magic happens.

You could be a purple polka dotted cross-dressing midget but if you get results nobody would think twice about hiring you.

Back in the early 90's, I went to a marketing seminar. Heard about writing copy. Decided to try it.

I wrote a letter to my 50 customers offering a special deal. Brought in $15K. I sent the letter again and made another $15K. I did it one more time and made $5K.

So a couple hundred dollars in a test turned into $35K.

I've been writing copy for various things ever since.

That's an amazing story Rick. What kind of business was the letter for, if you don't mind me asking?

At the time, I had a software development firm. Business Technology Group.

I offered a special deal on getting access to some of the development tools we had used on clients' projects. Basically, APIs.

When it was all said and done, the conversion rate was like 80%. Basically, found money.

PS: That success was the pivotal point where I shifted from being a software developer to also being a marketer.

    It's pretty simple.

It's a profession that will always be in demand, even in a nervous economy.

Plus the fact that I love it.
