No they are not bad for SEO unless they are spam sites themselves. DMOZ is one of the oldest link directories and can improve your ranking.

"The latest fashion" is to blame directories for bad SEO, but if you alternate your title, description and keywords you should be ok.
    Your "directory presentations":

    directory1/unique-description-of-your-biz-1
    directory2/unique-description-of-your-biz-2
    directory3/unique-description-of-your-biz-3
    directory4/unique-description-of-your-biz-4

All those subpages will get indexed by google and therefore, links from indexed webpages cant harm your ranking.

They are not "bad" for SEO but they also do not do much to help your SEO, either, If you have more than a few directory links in your backlink profile, your not building very good links.

Submitting your site to directories can be both GOOD and BAD. It depends on which directories you submit to, how you go about submitting, your intent, and the approach you take. You should submit your business to local business directories like Yelp, Merchant Circle, Yellow Pages, and similar networks in order to help boost your local search visibility on Google.

IF (that's a big "IF") you have a local brick and mortar business that sells to people. Getting listed as a local business is only going to lead to a ton of people showing up at your door or calling you on the phone which is fine if you have a retail outlet but not so welcome if you are a home based internet-only business. If you are dropshipping products, I'm not sure I would want to be listed in a local business directory.
