How to Filter/Segment a Mailing List Based on Gender?

I would like to be able to send more targeted offers to my list, and to do that, I needed to do some 'List Segmentation'. Some ESPs allow you the option to segment your list based on many things but I heard there is other softwares that can be used filter an Email list.

Is it good to just add a custom field of 'Gender' in addition to the 'Name' and 'Email' or is there another better way to do this? (I'm afraid this may lower conversion on the squeeze page).

The best way is to require them choose male or female. But as you said, does it effect your conversion.

You could filter their name against male names and female names, but there is likely to be names that do not exist in the lists and you get not match. There could be some names that exist in both lists.

You could run an offer that asks them to choose a link, one is for male and one is for female. But you will have those that never open or click or may click the opposite link.

You could use an append service, if they have data for the users. Then you also have the cost.

In the end, asking for it is the safest bet.

@CityCowboy - I wrote a tool that extract emails and guesses the gender of that email called Mail Miner

I found this file that had just about every name and gender from every country, then I took looked for a match between that file and the longest combination of letters in the email address for a match and use that as the "Guessed Gender" - It's far from a 100% accurate, because emails normally combine first and last names as well as made up addresses, but it's a start.

I tried doing a search for that "File" on google and I wasn't able to find it. The copy I had I converted into a database, but removed tons of information that the file provided - "% of population with that name by country", UniSex names, etc. That can be useful.

    I just found it
