But there is more fundamentals to it than you might think.
I had a lot of unanswered questions about email marketing and all of them got answered in this book (Seth Godin's - Permission Marketing) and so far I have only read half of it.
Example, I had a doubt whether it is OK to provide massive upfront value like videos for new optins instead of just informative newsletter emails... but I know now that it will cause the death of the campaign. This question was answered indirectly in this book!
No other guru, forum post or info product has covered the basic foundation of permission marketing as Seth Godin in this book.
A must read for every IMer.

- If you are in an airport which is empty and if someone asks you a question you will respond politely. But the same airport at the peak hour with noise and buzz will change your behaviour.
- Today advertising is like that. Advertisers are doing "interruption marketing" - interrupting in magazines, TV, radio, mobile phone, Internet, newspaper, roads & streets.
- As more and more of this is being done, consumers are tuning out and are more difficult to interrupt. Advertisers found the worst solution - interrupt more! More noisy, sexy, in the face ads.
- The solution is permission marketing. This is just like finding a mate. Instead of wearing a costly suit and bomarding each prospect with a marriage proposal... talk to get phone number, talk on phone to get a date, date to develop raltionship and then propose marriage.
- The ad should sell the optin, optin should sell relationship and use the relationship to increase the level of permission that the customer gives to you over the long term.
- Just like automobile replaced carts once for all... permission marketing will replace interruption advertising which try to sell the customer in the first interaction.
- And with technology, communicating with prospects is very cheap and each message can be delivered in a personalized manner.
