Adsense Ads vs. Affiliate Ads Using The "Costco Model"

One of the founders of retail giant "Costco" says that one key to their growth has been to only offer two or three selections of one item. Two or three brands of toothpaste, tvs, cereal, etc.

With that said, would any of you recommend only going with the standard 3 Adsense ads per each page of your website vs. relevant affiliate ads scattered up and down the pages? I feel like I could be making more revenue using only adsense and giving readers only a few ads to click from. Looking forward to reading your suggestions and ideals.

In my opinion, if your page has more than 3 ads on it anyway, it's a spammy/ trashy page.

As well, I don't think the "Costco model" you've defined works in this way. You're comparing sales, say affiliate marketing to ad clicks. Very different in my eyes. Now I bet if you were selling an ebook on how to train a dog, and your site had 30 to choose from, then you applied this strategy and only had 3 choices, you'd probably get more sales.

Finally, I don't think this should be called the "Costco model"... it is very much a matter of human physcology. I'll even recommend this TED Talk on "the art of choosing": Sheena Iyengar: The art of choosing | Video on TED.com

When you said "Costco Model" I thought you meant buy in huge quantities, then pass savings onto customers by selling in bulk. I was struggling to see how that connected to internet marketing. Got me to click on your thread.

    Cheers,
    Ben
