How to get testimonials for my first ebook

Hello all,

I've been on WF for several weeks and have been reading and reading as much as I can. I've been involved in IM since the late 90's at various big companys but have set out on my own in the past couple of months.

I've written an ebook on how to write and market ebooks, got a killer domain, a cool minisite ready to go, but I'm missing out on testimonials from actual people. I don't feel right making them up, and then replacing them as I get actual testimonials... but its a chicken and egg situation, how do I get testimonials if I haven't sold anything yet?

Is it viable to offer the ebook for free here on WF in exchange for a testimonial and photo? I think I saw kind of offer in one of the bazillion threads on here, lol, but thought I'd ask if that's a viable way to go about things.

I'm thinking I'll offer up a free ebook to 10 WF members in exhange for a testimonial. Does that sound like a good way to go about it or should I be concerned about someone swiping my copy and doing their own site with it?

Thanks for any responses

Paul Stanley

Absolutely this is a viable method of getting testimonials. We call it a review copy. One thing you can do is get in touch with several people that you know have a voice on here and ask them to review it for you personally. This way you get top marketers or top guys in general vouching for your product.

If you give the ebook away for free you will get all the testimonials you want, fast...I just find it kind of wierd that your ebook is about marketing ebooks, & you dont know how to get testimonials? But to each his own, you can also give discounts for testimonials or have people you know read the book and give honest responce

That's an excellent way to get testimonials for your ebook. In fact, if you're still looking for testimonials, PM me details and I'll be glad to give you a testimonial for your ebook.

My guess is back at "the company" he had people to do stuff like that for him... or he worked with clients who already had that kind of stuff.

I remember reading something, somewhere, about Clayton Makepiece going through files of testimonials and picking out the good ones.

Most companies have testimonials BEFORE they seek marketing help... small-time IM is a little weird that way.

Paul, you might get better results asking for reviews rather than testimonials. Maybe it's just me, but when I see threads offering a free product in return for a testimonial, it creates a quid pro quo that hurts the product's credibility.

Offering review copies is fine, and if your product is good, it will get you some good (honest) testimonials.

      Another suggestion...

Since you are releasing this product for the first time, you might want to call the initial positive reviews "prelaunch buzz" or something similar.

      FWIW

        ^^this.

Give out a handful of review copies. Don't force a testimonial out of anyone. Even when it is a freebie.

Thanks everyone for the great answers. I think I will go with 'review copies' as that does sound best!
