It's called a "genre", in itself, rather than a niche, I think. And the genre is "erotica".

There's also a related internet marketing market for "erotica", which includes a BDSM-related niche, covering the promotion of all kinds of related information/literature and accessories, some of it very expensive, I dare say.

Beware of the sensitivities and fine-print in the terms of service of parties like hosting companies and payment processors, when dealing with this kind of niche. However innocent your intentions, it's relatively easy to fall foul of narrow-minded interpretations of things.

    Or so I'm told.

(And obviously, regarding the movie itself, currently in the news, be very aware of other people's trademarks, merchandising rights, and so on: litigation "only happens all the time"! On no account use a trademarked/protected name for your own commercial purposes).

There is massive interest in 50 shades with the movie release and I have had the opportunity of working with a client who sells official 50 shades licensed adult toys and they are minting it at the moment.

We've put a lot of hard work into though including writing a bondage for beginners guide and an instruction manual to role play the scenes in the book.

Thanks to forward planning their website has had national exposure in red tops and on a major morning television show.

For us it was important to get the leg work in early as we wanted people to buy before valentines day. We will continue to operate for another few weeks then slow the campaign down (at least until the DVD comes out).

If you are coming into the game now you might have missed the boat but should keep an eye out on whats in the papers, magazines and television and rinse and repeat when the DVD's come out.

Yes there is. For a couple of years now. Mostly a niche about selling "adult toys" talked about in the books along with some of the music as well.

This ^^^^^^^ has trouble written all over it.

No, there is not a niche for Fifty Shades of Grey.

There are people interested in the books and in the movie, but those people are an audience.

How are you going to tap into that audience with your own product or service? Answer that question and you have discovered a niche.

But as Lexy states, don't use the name in your marketing.

Personally, I would stay a mile away. Build your business on a solid foundation, not a short term marketing event.

BDSM is illegal is many places. Be careful where you promote your whips and chairs.

Maybe you can write a how to manual on gathering harems of women to whip. I'm sure guys would buy that crap. Misogyny could be an untapped market goldmine. I haven't looked.

What? And run the risk of being accused of RAYYPE by them later on, saying you did all that stuff without their consent? Then the FTC will come after you with a SWAT team in tow.

Sounds like a niche that's gagging to be done to me. I'd like to try to get to the bottom of it. Whip up a website before it all gets tied up by the dominant IM'ers.

Trouble is I'm busy with other stuff at the moment. My hands are tied.

I was gonna write - 50 shades of green. A book on the trials and tribulations of IM, but some one beat me to it, gotta be quick on a stick in our game. There is no use writing it now. Alas, it could have been a proven winner.

I had this idea to write down a sex contract for men to download and make women to sign, and maybe sell sex toys kits. Women maybe will enjoy the movie, not the contract signing jeje

It's a sub niche. It's pretty small and I think the hype will die out after the movie gets old. Heard bad reviews about it but then again it's broken a few movie records in terms of sales already. Good luck

Sure, of course there. Problem is you should have started building toward that niche when they announced the movie, not after it's already out don't you think?

Try to find what's next....another Langdon book like Da Vinci Code perhaps?

A lot of you guys are missing the market, this book is mummy porn so you are looking at women who might potentially be interested in trying light bondage but probably won't go through with it in reality.

Looking at our stats we think things will tail off after this weekend.

For those looking at a method to replicate look at sites like future movies and see what's coming out over the next few years. Ideally match this up with something that has a cult following and ideally comes from a book. We began preparing this campaign months and months ago. There's a quote that when you see a bandwagon its already passed.

Also look at book sales and see what trends are there (2014 saw a massive rise in kid detective books and a drop in vampires). Then decide how you can cash in and begin the social and forum marketing. It takes time but delivers excellent results.

Funnily enough, I actually started a project for the Fifty Shades Of Grey Genre 3 days ago. I created an Amazon affiliate site selling BSDM products. I had a spike in sales a day after it released but it is now slowly dying. I wouldn't really consider it a niche as most niches are everlasting and this one isn't. It is however a good pocket money earner as I now have the funds to start even bigger projects.

      Figured I'd take the plunge.

Lots of good replies here. The only thing I'd add is that although I'd agree with everyone else who said that the hype surrounding "Fifty Shades of Grey" is destined to die down, I would point out that the market itself is still going to be there.

IMO, there's a psychological need that Fifty Shades and its predecessor Twilight meet within their audiences. I could be wrong, but I would assert that these readers want to keep thinking of themselves as respectable while enjoying horny stories like everybody else.

I say that because these stories present female protags who are essentially exploring their sexuality while being at the mercy of incredibly powerful men in Edward and Christian respectively. Despite (or maybe because of) the raw power of their partners, Ana and Bella weren't really equals and I don't think they had full agency in their romantic relationships. Especially when you get down to the erotic portions.

I apologize if I'm mixing up my examples (I read a lot of fiction), but what I'm getting at here is the scenes that had Edward watching Bella while she slept at night or Christian Grey getting mad when Ana tried to use a safeword.

On one level there's the seductive storyline where you have these ordinary young women being normal and doing normal things and yet still being irresistible to these impossibly experienced, worldly men. Edward, for instance, is a man who has allegedly lived a long time, seen a lot of world events, and met so many women throughout the ages. Yet ordinary, clumsy, teenage Bella is the one who captures his attention so completely.

Then there's the thrill of literally flirting with danger due to the drastic power imbalances in these relationships. Edward can kill Bella in an instant. I'm sure I don't need to explain what a billionaire with a dark side could get away with in today's capitalist-driven society. These naive women are vulnerable and they wouldn't stand a chance if either of these men were to turn on them.

Then we have Edward and Christian losing control to the point where Bella (wedding night scene with the broken bed) and Ana (BDSM albeit with a problematic dom from what I understand) may not necessarily have been able to put a stop to things if they'd wanted to. In other words, they have no choice but to "surrender to the pleasure".

IMO this is the allure for the housewife and hockey moms crowd. They get a sense of "safety" in a fantasy that undermines the female protag's choice while still allowing her to enjoy the intimate parts of her relationship because they are often picturing themselves in Bella or Ana's place. This type of storytelling allows these readers to maintain the self-perception of being wholesome, upstanding types (these female protags are not responsible for the man's response to them and they're not *too* assertive in initiating the sexual encounters they end up having iirc) while still giving them a respectable means of enjoying sex-driven novels.

Fifty Shades obviously made the concept more explicit, but I digress.

Anyway, this post has gotten way too long, but I think that this main point here about the readers wanting stories that blur the lines of consent without taking things into a socially unacceptable rape scenario, is what a future attempt to snag the Fifty Shades crowd will need to feature. This market isn't like other erotica readers who are maybe more matter-of-fact about wanting a sexy story to read. These readers want the sexy times but IMO they also don't want to take open responsibility for perhaps enjoying a book about "less than respectable" sex if you catch my drift.

If a good writer wanted to try their hand at this, I do think that this is probably an under-served reader's market. Although if OP wants to get in on Fifty Shades specifically, I imagine that would be hard to do at this point.

Or you could totally invest in Hentai. It gets a lot good traffic and a whole lot of videos and merchandise to boot. Westerners love them some good cartoon action, and all the moneymaking potential are virtually endless.

I have to agree with Gloria here, this niche is quite popular now, and there is money to be made, but I don't think the hype will last much longer. The movies was anything but a success, so I expect things to cool down in a while..

Of course this is not really a Niche, but a particularly kind of an Event or 'Current Issue' that you can capitalize on over a somewhat short period of time.

There are many Marketers who do this as a full time business. They make a buck then go on to other Trends and Events that happen and pursue it. Make their Money and move on.

It is not an unstable way to make consistent income if you know what you are doing

My opinion on this is that if you wanted to get into making money off this franchise you would realistically have needed to start on this two years ago to have made the most of the wave of publicity.
