Hi Guys

Before i publish a book on Kindle, do i need to obtain ISBN / register as a publisher?

Is it better to register as a publisher?

Thanks

You do not need to get a ISBN. Below is a blog post by Hugh Howey. If you don't know who Hugh Howey is, you haven't done much research on self-publishing.

Brandon asks about ISBNs and LCCNs | Hugh Howey

As far as registering as a publisher, there are different responses. Having done a lot of research myself, I would say "Yes". I think it's more professional, and opens the doors for some other things as well.

There is a ton of research on this; it boils down to what works best for you.

    No to both.

Amazon will give you free ISBN, marking them as your publisher. When you are starting out thats irrelevant. Once you have dozen books selling for millions, you can republish them as different editions with ISBN's making you or whoever a publisher, if you feel need to then.

In USA Bowker have monopoly on ISBN and their prices are ridiculous so if you are not making ton of money, its waste of your money to buy ISBN's. They want $150 for ONE, or around $500 or so for 100, which is just insane.

In Canada, government issues ISBN's, free.

Considering great majority of Kindle ebooks do not sell ANY copies, unless they are 99 cents in which case they might sell few if cover looks pretty, last thing you should waste money on at this time are ISBN's.

Nope. You can literally have your book published in five minutes (assuming that you have your content and cover ready).

You don't need the ISBN. If you are from outside US then you should have TIN to save yourself from tax witholding (30%).

Before you publish your Kindle book, you might want to research your niche.

On Kindle, 50% of your success rides on Niche targeting. 40% on content quality and 10% on internal marketing on Kindle.

Don't join the VAST MAJORITY of kindle publishers who aren't making money.
