Would Wordpress.org fit our needs

My father in law asked me to help him set up a new online business. He has hosting for several websites, made by his son but in this case he wants to use an easy CRM system so he can add content easily.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Would Wordpress.org fit this description?

2. Is Wordpress something a non-programmer can use? (I know a bit of HTML and CSS, but I can't set up a website, can't build one from scratch.)

3. Wordpress.org is free. Does this mean if we download a theme, that we can have the same theme as 10 other companies?

4. The goal of the website is ecommerce. Is this easy to set up? We want to use Paypall.

5. How safe is a theme like Wordpress?

This are a couple of questions that came to mind. I could use some advice.

Wordpress is suitable for almost anything and yes, you can easily achieve what you want with Wordpress. A quick Google search for a CRM plugin returned this:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-crm/
    https://kinsta.com/blog/crm-wordpress-plugins/

So there are already plugin solutions for this.

You don't need to know how to program, Wordpress is all visual unless you want to get advanced.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by your 3rd question, you can choose themes from the Wordpress.org directory or off a 3rd party website such as Themeforest. Many companies share the same these however they an be customized a lot.

eCommerce is very easy to set up with WooCommerce (plugin) which integrates well with Paypal.

Wordpress itself is very secure and there are numerous plugins available to boost the security of your site!

    1. Would Wordpress.org fit this description?

Yes. Wordpress can do anything you want it to do. I'm a web developer who focuses primarily on Wordpress. We've done eCommerce, simple business pages and anything else you can imagine with Wordpress.

    2. Is Wordpress something a non-programmer can use? (I know a bit of HTML and CSS, but I can't set up a website, can't build one from scratch.)

Yes. It has a simple kitchen sink WYSIWYG style editor to add images or text.

    3. Wordpress.org is free. Does this mean if we download a theme, that we can have the same theme as 10 other companies?

Yes, if you utilize a free theme, especially a popular one, you'll end up with the same theme a lot of other people use. I used to try to work with themes and edit theme but most themes from my experience are poorly coded and not built well for changing or SEO.

If you're on a budget, I guess a theme is alright but I would recommend hiring an actual developer to code a theme for you from scratch.

    4. The goal of the website is ecommerce. Is this easy to set up? We want to use Paypall.

There's plenty of plugins to help you setup an ecommerce shop. Is it easy to setup? Ah, that's another story.

    5. How safe is a theme like Wordpress?

It's safer than some alternatives. However, if you don't keep your site up to date, you don't update your plugins and have weak passwords, Wordpress users are a prime target for viagra/pharma hacks (which aren't fun to remove).

    It's relatively safe though.

Almost half the sites on the entire web are built on WordPress, so it's definitely a good option. You can also grab a theme and customize it to your liking without hardcore programming skills; it will just take you a little time to find all the options and such. If you buy from a reputable theme seller though, then they usually have very good documentation and free support to get you up and running.

For eCommerce, you just want a theme that already has it integrated. I won't say it's easy to set up, but it's not that hard either when 80% of the work is done for you by the person that made the theme. Most use PayPal as an option so you're good there too.

In terms of safety, no site on the web is really safe these days. If a hacker wants in, then he will find a way. WordPress is as secure as a custom-built site or any of the other platforms though; just be sure to download security plug-ins and you should be okay.

After reading this all, especially the part where we will probably have the same theme as other companies or need to hire a programmer, I think shopify is a better option. Am I right?

YES! Wordpress is one of the best scripts out there, you can pretty much do anything with it! Which brings me to question #4:

    Yup.
If you can't handle the task though, you can always hire someone to help you out (like, someone from Fiverr or other freelance websites who does this sort of thing).

Yes, everyone can use it. You just need to install it, you can do it in a few clicks, and once you have it installed, you'll see it's very easy to use! (well, apart from the editor part, that's pure code).

Well... yes. Unless you make some minor modifications to it or, unless you buy a premium theme.

It's pretty safe. Big websites use it, there are plenty of plugins you can choose from and install for safety reasons.

I am leaning more and more towards Shopify. Yes, we pay 29$ a month for it. However, most is already set up and mofications are easy to be made.

I don;t want to exclude Wordpress but the fact that we might walk into the need of hiring a wordpress freelancer worries me a bit. We want to be able to set up and go.

Most of the top internet marketers use Wordpress, so if it good enough for them ....................

The good thing about using this facility is that, you don't need to have any programming skills, you can use their excellent range of free tools to create your own design and layout and they're also mobile friendly which helps with the latest round of Google updates

It is true that if you just want an easy-to-manage e-commerce site and do not mind about the fact that you do not have own hosting and the mounting costs (for example Shopify themes are on average more expensive than Wordpress themes), you should go with Shopify.
WooCommerce does require some set-up and customizations but in the long term, it's the more economical solution.

For now, we will probably take a free theme on Shopify, take one as basic as possible so we can alter the colors so it looks ours. That's possible right?

180$ for a theme is a lot cheaper then hiring a good web designer or a web design company

Wordpress.COM is also free. I'm not sure if you are aware of the difference between the .com and .org versions of the Domain "Wordpress".

The .org is the hub of the Open Souce distribution of the blogging software. It is where you download the Wordpress script and install it on your hosted server (but many hosting companies have software that will install Wordpress automatically for you).

The .com is the hosted version of the software. You can get a limited free hosted account with them. You can get one even without having a domain name. And they also offer more advanced hosting options for a fee

Yes wordpress is free to use and can be used as your website CMS. I think it is the most easiest tool that anyone can handle easily without any programming skills etc. Yes you can use any paid or free WP theme on any website you like. But you cannot copy the exact same design of any website if they have some custom WP them designed.

    No. Get your own domain.

But Wordpress on your own hosted domain would be fine.
