Is anybody worried about Apple iOS9?

I heard today that Apple will have an ad blocker in iOS 9

How Apple ad block in Safari and iOS 9 will affect publishers and advertisers - Business Insider

It looks like it is going to hit some people really hard especially if they are using re-targeting scripts.

According the article above, Apple has a 25% share of all mobile web browsing and the effects could result in lots of publishers going out of business.

I am not a techie so don't know if there are ways to get round this, but the news item I heard on BBC Radio 4 today sounded bleak for advertisers and businesses.

There was one light at the end of the tunnel for online marketing , which said that the shift will make more online businesses charge for their content.

This might be a natural evolution of the Internet and the way that it is used in future, so there will still be opportunities to adapt our businesses.

Is it just another 'scare' story like Y2K?

I am not so sure. I think it could have a serious impact on a lot of marketers. Many businesses rely on the advertising revenue and other small marketers like us, use the retargeting script so it will have an effect on our traffic too.

Couple months ago everyone was freaking out about Google announcing it would penalize non-mobile friendly sites on mobile devices. Everyone panicked and the gloom-and-doom machine ran full steam.

I'm still waiting to see anyone go out of business. Heck, a company I work with has 70 websites, none mobile-friendly, and we haven't seen a single drop in sale.

Apple and mobile really isn't the juggernaut the tech industry wants you to believe it is. Let them peddle their ware and focus on your own business - selling on the internet.

P.S: $10 bet that your sales from retargeted traffic come from desktop users, not mobile.

Nope. Not worried. I don't think too many of us here depend on Mobile ads. My experience has been that they convert like Adfly ads - in other words, they don't convert.

But in general if a business depends on one source of traffic to stay in business, they are destined for trouble at some point anyhow.

The Internet will always be a volatile "place" to do business, but the strong will survive.

Converting like adfly ads? That's the craziest thing I've heard all month.

You said "In your experience" - So that might be true, but it is not true for all/most markets. I'm assuming you're in the MMO niche, and I can't speak to that, but many of the markets I'm in do extremely well with mobile. Sometimes making up the lions share of the revenue. I'm an affiliate in the diet, skin, and muscle markets mainly.

I do the majority of my advertising through facebook, and mobile users are extremely profitable, not to mention cheaper per click.

The majority of people online are using mobile devices, and there are 10's of millions of users that rely solely on their phone as their primary means of internet connection.

I'm not worried about the apple update or adblock, but I wanted to let people know mobile is a huge market, and it's getting bigger everyday.

I'm surprised by some of the comments here.

Unless your business is uniquely tied within the IM marketing bubble, it would be really unwise to dismiss mobile marketing as much as the comments seem to suggest.

Out of all of my friends and family, I think that I am the ONLY one who uses my desktop computer, and one of only a few who uses their laptop.

Everybody else I know who are not involved with Internet marketing use tablets (mostly, but not exclusively iPads) or smartphones for ALL of their information online.

Are my friends unique? I don't think so.

To be fair, the only people I see being directly impacted are:

    1) Click bait websites - No one will miss them, really.

    2) Made-for-Adsense blogs - See above.

Mobile users are the worst target for advertising online. Mobile is a distraction. No one gives their mobile device their undivided attention. People go online on their mobile while they commute, during bathroom breaks, walking down the street or while watching TV. There's always a distraction just around the corner. If they find your content interesting, they'll find you when they get home and take some time to relax or work in front of the computer...

Paying to target mobile traffic is a waste of money... unless you target them IN APP with relevant content (aka IN APP purchases).

Innovate or die! It has been the way since commerce was created.

I have never seen anything that has stymied advertising not be supplanted by something that attacked the problem from a different angle. This will not be any different.

        Cheers. - Frank

It all boils down to adaptation.

People have adapted to google's many updates and gmail's many changes.

If you know hat you are doing AND you offer REAL VALUE, you'll be just fine.

However, if you offer CRAP and you have to rely on tricks to put food on the table, WATCH OUT BELOW!

I'm unqualified to comment on this (as I am a newbie), but as I read this, the following came to mind.

This is something that end users will have to turn on. It won't be turned on by default.

Anyone that makes the effort to figure out where the settings are, and then takes the time to configure it, are probably the end users that would not click/touch/look at ads. In other words, these people aren't your target audience. You still have several billion targets that will never use ad blocking of any type.

I doubt that iOS 9 extensions will have a significant impact on anyone's bottom line. Just my uneducated 2¢.
