Do microniche websites make more money than general niche sites?

Just so I understand this correctly, a new website that focused on say Dell laptop batteries would rank easier and do more sales than say a new website about just "Laptops + Parts"?

A store that focused on only tie dye shirts would have a better chance at doing well than a website that sold all different kinds of shirts?

A store that only focuses on beanies would do better than a store that just sells all different kinds of hats?

Im just trying to wrap my head around it because naturally I want to offer more items to have a better chance at making a sale. But is the reality that I'll sell more with less because its focused?

  • It's not that it necessarily will rank better, but that it is easier to get a better ranking than a broad ranging keyword. It's a small but important difference.

Obviously it still has to be worked at to make it sufficiently relevant in terms of ranking factors, but micro niche development takes place in a lot less of a crowded market space. Broad niches have huge players with huge resources and that will eat up your time and your resources and lots have them have the brand power that has people seeking them out.

Yes you my well sell less but a couple of things to bear in mind. Paradoxically those less sales may well turn out to be more than you would have sold had you tried to compete with the big dogs in a broad niche. Also if there is less time and effort required to get one site ranking, that turns into spare time and resource to cultivate other sites on the same principle.

Even the downside has an upside.

Thanks for the explanation Andrew. It's a new way of thinking for me to grasp.
I saw a commercial and this woman has a website that only sells glasses

Now if that were me I'd be selling glasses and cases and repair kits, and also hats and scarves and bracelets and gloves, etc etc. lol
But she would have more success than me because she's focused on one product and not watered down with 1000 products.

I'm going to try this again but this time go very focused and see what happens

It's not about which one will perform better. Here's what I mean. When people create micro-niche websites around a particular product, it's usually for one of two reasons. They either want to get ranked more quickly for a keyword (like if they are promoting a product during launch, where those who rank more quickly and get to the top make more sales), or they want to test out a niche to see if they like it.

Basically, it's a issue of time. In other words, a larger website can take longer to rank for specific keywords. In terms of which one performs better, that depends on the products you're promoting and how well you get ranked for certain keywords. In a nutshell, a micro-niche site is for fast money, whereas an authority (larger niche) site is something for the long-term and something you plan to stick with a while.

  • Build an authority website, whether it is broad or more specific - thats the way to go these days!

Micro niche sites WILL NOT get you traffic through Google.

They might work if you have an alternative traffic strategy. But if you're leaning towards an organic traffic model, then you need to create an authority site.

Google cares more about "domain authority" than it ever has before.

Agree about authority sites, however, depends on how little the niche is, and you may get organic traffic but, still, it is, at the end of the day...all about the traffic your site receives.
