Popup, popunder, hoverover, or inline

What do you like the best.

personally, i dont care for hoverover or inline ads, they are annoying and to me somewhat sneaky and i think that it irritates people more than anything. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I am not a fan of the moving, or "flying in" opt-in forums. To me they look needy, and since they pop-up right away they distract the visitors from reading the actually website!

    Cheers,

yes, that aggrivates me too. very annoying. i really hate the ones that not only fly in, but follow you down the page if you try to scroll down to get away from them

An exit pop-up works well. It gives the visitor one more chance to opt in to your list as they are leaving your site.

Nothing annoys me more than pop-ups of any kind, bit I have three different pop-up blockers running and noscript firefox plugin, so I rarely see them anyway.

Also, more annoying than pop-ups is voice audio or video that automatically plays when you land on the page.

I hate the voice things. Or the one where the minature actor/actress walks out from the side.

I cant say that i really like the page intro that has the robotic image/voice for 'customer service' on the page.

        I hate these things.

But I hate more the fact that they really work well.

I use fly in opt in forms because they work better then other formats I have tried. Test one way for a month. then try a hover fly in ad.

Guess which one gives you the most sign ups?

I couldn't agree more. I personally only use inline. It might not be a strategic move, but I try to exclude anything from my websites that annoys me when I look at other people's websites. Anything that flashes an optin box in my face is incredibly annoying.

        Popup, popunder, hoverover, or inline
IMHO, asking "popup OR an inline form?" completely overlooks a solution that often works best: both.

As many have commented, some people just don't like popups. I don't like them. I close them without reading them most of the time (unless I'm looking to learn from them or critique them).

But assuming you want to try a popup... why should you not also have an inline form on the page? After all, someone who instinctively closes a popup might still be an appropriate prospect later (after they've read/viewed the content on your page). No inline form, no lead capture, no good.

Are you saying you don't care for a form embedded directly in the page itself (inline)?

I feel like you must mean something else, because unless you're completely against list-building at all you would not likely find an inline form to be sneaky or annoying.

        Yep.

Here are two examples of this.

I think users are most tolerant of traditional 728x90 or 600x160 banner ads. You can use flash to make these ads expand when moused over.

I make the most money (per impression) off of interstitials or hovers, but users hate those. They'll leave your site.

I saw something really cool today when I was looking for a free way to put up an exit popup on a wp blog.

It's called Ultimate Footer Ad v2.0

It was cool enough that I put it on my wish list of priority purchases.

Yeah robdraw how do you make those and any chance for a footer 'slide up' Wordpress plugin? I'd pay for that

    Well, this is quite cool...

I started working on a Footer Ad Script project a few weeks ago, and by seeing the response so far of everyone's current favorite style of opt-in/slide-in/ad, this sure gives me the kick in the butt to put the finishing touches on it and release the sucker...

    Sooo...

Does anyone want to Beta-Test my soon to be released Footer-Ad Script?
It's going to be released with open source/resellers rights licensing...

You can take a peek at the demo here:

Send me a PM if you are interested in Beta-Testing...

Reminds me of the Pretty Link Bar (only with your ad.. instead of the name of your site and current location).
