What is the best position for my pop-ups to appear?

Hi, recently I was working with a client who asked me this very question:

"What is the best time and position for my pop-ups to appear?

TBH, it left me clueless

I gave him an advice (through my own web surfing experience) but also recommended him to look out for more info before finally deciding.

I would really like to ask warriors who have had experience tweaking pop-ups. What are the best positions for pop-ups to appear? Are there any standards or statistics that show which positions are converting well?

I don't know the answer to that specific question but I'm sure if you Google it you can find the information.

However, bear in mind that people (if not most people) find popups extremely annoying and that's why popup blockers have become popular.

The best way to avoid that is to have what is known as an exit pop. This is where someone closes down your page and you get a message which says, 'Stay on this page', or,' leave this page'.
When you click on 'stay on this page', you are redirected to a different offer or a reduction in price on the original offer. Obviously if you click 'leave this page' then that's what happens.

This is far less intrusive and annoying than straightforward popups.

Hi, Thanks for your input! I know of many such plugins that show up a pop up just when you are about to leave. It works well. But recently, I have been noticing a change in trend.

These pop ups are shifting to the very bottom right of web pages. They show up when the reader has absorbed certain amount of information. Personally, I think it's less annoying than any other pop-up. Anyways, I might be wrong. Big thanks again! Cheers!

The majority of popups that I've seen appear in the canter of the screen. Now, I, like most people immediately close them with a little curse word, but I noticed that the better looking the popup is, the simpler it is and the MOST value it gives the visitor I tend to look at it more. So GIVE, preferably a lot and with a smile and they won't be mad at you so much...

Bluemotion is correct that exist pops are less intrusive and can be very effective if the offer is compelling. But in addition to that the best way to figure out what position works best is to test it. One position may work well on one site and not at all on another.

    No stats, just opinion...

I believe that having the popup show in the center of the screen, preferably in some type of shadowbox, is an optimum placement.

I also believe that there should be a delay, either by looking for exit intent (like moving the cursor through the top of the window) or by using a timer, in order for the visitor to have time to get some value from the page before presenting the popup.

You can cut down the annoyance factor by quite a bit by doing simple things like making the close option easy and obvious. Presenting a simple call to action and initiating that with a single click. Don't be insulting.

Popups are becoming so ubiquitous that people are getting over the annoyance as long as the presentation and value proposition are favorable.

I have been looking into trying the pop-under approach. They seem less intrusive and do not all of a sudden block your view while you are trying to read something

One thing to remember ad blockers don't let them show! there was a stat now that 80% of people have them so they can surf and no ads and mobiles now has them as well

I use thrive themes and their leads generator for pop ups. I prefer the pop-up that covers the entire screen. I also use the ribbon opt-in as it's less intrusive and only overs a small portion of the screen.

It seems that a lot of others using thrive themes are using the "slide in" opt-in as well.

Hi Robert. Didn't get it. You mean it scrolls from left to right?

Most of the people don't like popups. When i have to place them somewhere in a website i usually placed them in the center of the page and make them appear when user scrolls the page more than 60 or 70% but it all depends.

I don't have a straight forward answer but imo the best way to find out is to split test and see what works better for you

It depends...I like doing it when they stay on a page for more than 10 seconds. I know some other people have it to make the pop up appear when the person is about to close out of the page.

And in terms of position...a nice big lightbox dead center in the page works best.

Try a ribbon or optin bar. Much less intrusive and they remain at the top or bottom of your site for the length of the visit.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions. So, the most common answer was to try it in the middle of the page, making sure your language is polite and less intrusive. I also like the idea of A/B testing and seeing which one works best. Thanks to all of you again. Cheers!
