Liar!! There Is No Such Thing As A Passive Income!

Yeh, that title sentence,(
There Is No Such Thing As A Passive Income), is a line I heard every so often when trying to explain to people what I do and how I earn money working from home.

No one wants to believe it and I have to admit that when I first got started I also began to think the whole “Make Money Online” thing was just one big hoax.

I didn’t make my first dollar until a few months down the line and those few months were shear hell. I knew nothing of computers, search engines, creating websites or even how popular Amazon really was.

All I knew is that I wanted to give it a go.

I was struggling financially, mentally I was a mess and my thoughts of any kind of future were waning.

The few things on my side were the fact that I was very hard working, determined and super persistent.

The first couple of years were a huge learning process for me that included A LOT of information overdrive. I mean, I was struggling with depression and the last thing I needed was more “stuff” to squeeze into my fully packed brain.

But I kept going…I kept fighting…I kept ignoring everyone’s negativity towards this so called “online passive income”.

Fast forward a bunch of years and here I am today….finally earning and always learning.

Passive income or residual income does exist. Yes, I really do make money while I sleep, (I live in Spain so the time difference helps…lol).

If you want it too, then it is there for the taking…you just gotta watch out for a few things.

This is what I learned, especially with my own experience of struggling to “get somewhere” in this industry. There are 4 main reasons that can cause normal, motivated people to fail with their online businesses.

A True Belief That It Is Possible
Sounds weird but just because you are going through the motions it doesn’t mean that you really believe you can “do it”. It is bad enough having to listen to the negativity of others without having to also deal with your own negative thoughts.

Don’t get me wrong, you will have bad days and things will go wrong but that comes with any job and you must treat this like any other job.

Thousands of people start new offline businesses every day and the thing that keeps them going is the belief that they will make a success of it.

It may not be this year….or the next…but they believe that the struggle is worth it and some day they will see the return in their invested time and money.

Same goes for making money online. You just gotta keep at it!

Fear Of Investing Some Money
The first few years of doing this I hardly spent any money on the business. I guess I didn’t “believe” in the business, (re: above paragraphs).

Although I did start to make money I didn’t really see any huge returns until I invested a bit of money. I am talking about tiny amounts of cash for things like software and online courses, etc.

It wasn’t so much the money that pushed me forward….it was the change in my mindset DUE to me investing money in what I was doing.

I was no longer investing just my time…I had finally turned it into a real business by also investing my money. Now I HAD to succeed.
The change in my mindset made a huge difference.

You’ll need resources, software, traffic, outsourcing, etc. You won’t need it all at once of course, but being afraid, reluctant or unwilling to invest money in your business is most likely to be the thing that kills it off in the long run.

Even if you put in just a tiny amount each week or invest in quality courses, it is still going towards improving your business.

Not Acquiring The Specific Knowledge
You don’t need to know everything but you DO need to know the right things. Don’t be lazy! If you want to get anywhere making money online you gotta be prepared to learn and learn some more and then learn again!

You need to know how to access the information you don’t have. Likewise if your business isn’t moving forward because you simply don’t have the technical aspects of how to do something then find out or find someone who can do it for you.

Do some due diligence. Use Google, check YouTube, forums, etc whatever you need to FIND OUT the information that you need to know.

Not Enough Time Spent On Marketing
Come on admit it…how many of you regularly check your emails while working online? – Or stop to check out the latest sports results? – Or get distracted by all those fun looking shiny online objects?

Then there is all that work you put into creating something, a review website, a kindle book, a blog, a YouTube channel, etc…yet you do almost zero marketing for them!

How are you supposed to get any traffic? How are you going to get eyes on your product or website or video and then convince people to buy what you’re selling?

I personally find the marketing side of this business boring…but I gotta do it! I used to procrastinate a lot when it came time to market a Kindle book I created or a website I just built. Now I just get on with it….and you need to do the same.

Stop playing around with that new plugin you bought or that software or that new website theme. You should be doing something to move your business forward.

These are just four areas that I needed to improve in order to move forward. There are many more but you need to figure out the ones that are important to you.

In any case I hope this has helped all you newbies take your first steps into this business. I hope it saves you some time. I hope it gets you to think a little more about how you work and where you hope your business is going.

Good luck!

P.S. I am sure other experienced marketers here can add their own points that they feel helped them in the early days....or even today.

      How did I forget that?!
That was a huge factor for me too especially in the early days when "paying the bills" and "needing to eat" was more of an imprtance than "I wanna buy that brand new car".

You are right. There is never that certainty that the time you put into a new project will actually pay off.

    Hey man,

    Great, informative post!

On top of what you said about investing money- for me i found that investing that money into a mentor really did help me. Learning from someone who had been through the trial and error over the years really did aid me in ensuring that i had the best foundation to start an online business. It;s so vital to be guided in the right way.

    Kind regards,

    James.

Btw, I came back and wanted to add that your Headline is pretty decent. Especially the first word which stirs up a little Curiosity and Controversy.

Enough so that I clicked on a second time

P.S. Passive Income is real that's for sure. It takes some work to make it a go. But I still have Adsense Sites that I have not logged on in years to even look at and still bring me Money

I think a lot of people have / are experiencing the same type of thing. As a total newbie they may get into this thinking that it is going to be a walk in the park and that money will flow within days.

Of course, it doesn't work that way for most.
The business has huge rewards but you gotta work to get those rewards...just like any other job.

All very true, the other major factor is to align the business you are doing with your strengths (usually means something you like doing as well).

I constantly see people jumping into an online business doing X or Y because they see someone else doing it successfully, because they have been told it is the best approach or because they believe it is the quickest path to profitability and yet it is badly aligned with their strengths, skills, abilities and likes.

When you find a match between your skills and strengths along with business model it makes a HUGE difference.

For me, that means product creation model, for others it may be a service, still others may be great at networking (so sales, affiliate marketing may be there thing) and still others are extremely vibrant on video or podcast so they make it there...it's not by accident, you have to find your strengths and what you like doing then match it to a business model to really succeed.

  • Over the past decade of marketing online I've helped to train (Attempted to train is a perhaps better) many people.

The biggest thing I see is fear of failure. They are afraid that they will fail so they don't put in the effort needed to succeed.

Digital Marketing is all about failure and those who embrace it, learn from their mistakes and move on are the ones who really make it online.

to this day only 1 in 10 digital marketing campaigns are big wins for me. Starting out I had to go through about 6 months of failure till I actually made my first 100 bucks online.

The amount of time and effort with little payoff besides educating yourself defeats most who get started.

Just my rant. Thanks for the post. I had to open it because of the article title.

      Very true!
Thinking back to my early days fear of failure did play a big part for me. I actually fought failure for at least a couple of years. Getting angry and hating myself for "messing up" etc.

As you say, once I learned to embrace failure and accept it as part of the job things began to get a bit easier for me.

      Thanks for the input.

Great post. I really like that you talk also lot about motivation and fears since it is many times omitted. Also last advice about marketing is great. People create often something great yet they don't continue with right marketing. Or they start but quit quickly because they don't see any results.

I think many of us who have been doing this for a while now have experienced this or something similar. Let's face it, the "working from home" thing is a dream job for most...but at the same time these people STILL do not truly believe it is possible. So they don't even bother trying.

People used to laugh at me and think I was nuts for "wasting my time" on this "nonsense".
Lol....yeh....those very same people are not so quick to laugh at my choices anymore.

Passive income is still good income if it allows you to never have to work at a job again. Even if it's $1,500/month... if it's just YOU that you have to take care of, i'd do all the "passive income" work necessary to maintain and build on that $1,500/month figure.

Seeing that residual payment just appear out of thin air.... It's like your printing your money. Anyways.... Passive income and leveraging the help of a team is what I call the future on home business. The biggest problem is thinking that online marketing is FREE you won't see much income until you spend some money on valuable advertising. In the early days, you might could get somewhere posting for free here and there. Those days are gone. You really do have to spend money to make money these days. Passive income can come later but you have busted your butt to get it.

    Hi Andy,

    Good stuff

Earning passive income - like doing anything in life - is all about your energy. Belief plays a chief role. As does hugging, feeling and letting go your fears.

I stubbornly clung to cheap but poor hosting for my first 5 years online because I hated paying more than $7 a month, or, I needed to pay less than 100 smackers a year. This hurt my blog, brand and ate into my income streams.

I finally caved, changed hosts, paid more like $15 to $20 a month, got super service, sped up my site, my blog stayed up all the time, and I gained confidence to add income streams - passive and active - to my blog.

I also invested in a CDN and other premium services and dropped some cash to pay for a freelance writing service as well.

Sure I have spent thousands of dollars on my blog over my career but:

1: I've made it back a few times over

2: All of it was written off come tax time

3: I travel all over the world because of the active and passive income I make, in part due to the investments I made

First though, I had to embrace my terror of losing/investing money. I felt it. I flipped out. I let it go. I invested. I worked for fun, spreading love. I prospered.
