How to Engage Visitors on My Site

First of all, my profuse thanks to all of the members who have been kind enough to respond to my previous posts, as well as my thanks to those who will be generous enough to respond to this query.

I have created a self-help Website for middle-aged people. It has a unique 13-step program, with parts like Finding Motivation, Achieving Goals, Good Nutrition, etc. There are more than 80,000 words, and so I have created videos of all of the steps. The videos are about 5-8 minutes long.

My concern is that people will visit the site, and like the concept, but not be motivated enough to spend the time reading/watching the materials.

I have thought of putting the videos into courses, with a way to keep track of where you're at etc. My concern (besides it would be a lot of work) is that I have seen very-good courses that only have a 30% or so completion rate.

My monetization strategy is to build a list of people who are enthused about having happiness and health in middle age and beyond, and then market to that list. But if people just go to the site, poke around a bit and then leave, even if I get their email addy, they may not be that dedicated and thus buy nothing.

May I ask for your thoughts and suggestions on this?

Many thanks in advance!

First, let me say that it sounds like you have done some work, and
have some idea of where you want to go with your project which
is certainly a step in the right direction (to use an over-used cliche').

    Now, how to engage people.

The best way to have people interested in what you have on your
site is to target those people from the start. Go to where they are
and tell them about what you do. Then you let them know where
you live and invite them to your home (web site). Oh, by the way,
the more comfortable you can make a prospective reader feel,
the more likely they are to check you and your web site out.

As far as keeping them engaged, you can't even give someone
a ring and expect that the engagement will last.

You are talking about people. There will be some people who will
take 10 minutes or more checking things out, and some will only
    hang for 10 seconds.

Just make sure that your content is good, your site is easy to navigate,
and it is easy on the eyes (simple is better).

There is nothing wrong with putting videos into courses as long as
you are giving them something worthwhile for their money.

The one thing that disappoints me just a bit is your comment about
it being a lot of work. If it is not a lot of work (especially when you
are getting started), then you shouldn't start. Yes, it is a lot of
work to put together a great (and it should be GREAT) web site.

I don't think that the work thing is a problem as you have already
put in some time. You still need to continue to put in the time to
upgrade content, add content, and most of all get out there and
find the people who are most likely to want to check out your site.

You do have a lot of competition. That's good. Check out what
they are doing. Yup! more work.

    Good Luck!

I agree about targeting. Find other sites, forums, groups, social networks, etc. where people might be interested in your niche. Contribute to the discussions and the communities and post a link to you site where allowed and when it is appropriate.

Also, be sure to provide something of value to the visitors on your site. Hopefully more conversions will come.

I've had success with a live chat call to action with one insurance agency client. The visitor would click the call to action button to chat live with an agent right there on the website. I like having the visitor initiate the chat with a button than to have the chat widget hanging out at the bottom of the website taking up screen real estate.
