I know this stuff but I'm still a little unsure on this one.
My son is 11 years old and wants a PSP so I've told him to start a blog and earn some money with it. We've been doing some keyword research and in the niche we are considering we have found a good keyword phrase that has only 16,000 exact match results. Now, I know that everyone says it is the exact match that you consider when choosing a niche and keyword phrase and that is what I usually do, however, the 'broad' match results for all my niches have never been as high as this one. So although there are only 16,000 exact matches, there are over 177,000,000 results for broad match. The SEO competition stats for the top 10 are quite good and I think very achievable to get a top 10 spot looking at these stats, but I'm just wondering if that amount of broad match results is just too much competition. |

It will take months of effort to break into the top ten, but well worth the effort if the traffic is high and the keyword pays OK. Check out the KEI for keywords that are related to your main keyword.
Also, this is important. Create not one, but several websites and several blogs. Blogs are good for breaking news that is always being updated, but websites are good for information that is static, like history of a game box. BTW, I can exhale PR3 web sites, but many of my blogs even with XLent content and lots of links are stuck at PR2. Also, it is easier to convince search engine to make an HTML website an "authority site" than a wordpress blog. Blogs are still seen as red head step children by the main engines. |

Ok thanks. I think I need to stick to Wordpress for this one though since it is for my son, I don't think teaching him html is the best idea just yet

You should check for competition with the allintitle command*; this will show you web pages that have your keyword phrase in the title, ie, the real competition.
*Go to Google, and type in "allintitle:dog training" This will only return results of web pages that have "dog training" in their titles. WM |

Should you do that with or without quotes?
I'm getting zero in quotes and about 8,000 without quotes. |
