Default Which domain would you buy?

I was about to buy a domain for a small niche site (IPK-style), and the exact keyphrase isn't available. Say my keyphrase is "pickle slicer".

pickleslicer.com and pickleslicer.net are both taken.

pickleslicer.org is available

Do I take pickleslicer.org? I have a slight aversion to .org names since their "supposed" to be for nonprofits. But as I said, that aversion is only slight.

Or, do I add a prefix or suffix?

mypickleslicer.com?

pickleslicertool.com?

Something else?

I've done a search on this, and the results are still a bit muddy as to the importance of having the domain match the keyphrase exactly.

Help - quick!

Thanks,
Jason

Just a word of caution:
I hope these are just examples, not the actual domains you want.

I would never publish domain names I intend to buy, just too risky.

I would go for the com versions.

In my experience, Google definitely favors domains in this order: .COM, .NET and .ORG. And of course, best results are obtained by having the exact keywords in your domain with no dashes, no extras.

I have to say I've seen no real difference between .ORG and .NET.
Both seem to get good rankings. Obviously .COM is best but if it's not available then I'd get the .ORG. ... particularly as long as you can get the domain with your keyword(s) in it.

I would not go for .org unless you are non-profit as .org is intended for and i would expect it like that.

.net is a good alternative if .com is gone but i'd try to find another .com before going with .net

Thanks for the replies so far.

And no, those are not my real keyphrases.

I guess that's my question. Would an exact match .org name be better than a .com if the .com had an additional word? Can the perceived advantage of a .com domain compensate for it not being an exact match?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, a .ORG exact match prevails over a .COM with extra characters.

Thanks all. I ended up getting the .org name so I'd have an exact match.

You did the right thing.

The .org version will prevail over a .com version with additional words.

However, the domain name will only help you so much... as I'm sure you know.

Backlinks and Content will ultimately determine your ranking in the long run.

Never judge a book by its post count :)

It the domain is the exact phrase that I want, I always get the org. Don't have any problems ranking with orgs and visitors don't really care whether or not org was supposed to be nonprofit.

If you are going to promote a lot of diff pickle slicers, a generic name would be best: bestpickleslicers.com

If you are promoting a sub niche of pickle slicers this would be best:

nameofslicerpickleslicers.com

example:

gordonspickleslicers.com

If it's just for ranking purposes I would go for the .org as in my own personal experience google treats them the same as .com & .net.

Cheers,
Danny.
