Ever been spammed by phone?

I came home yesterday and there was a message on my answering machine telling me I should visit a certain .com website.

Frankly I don't remember what the website was and I wouldn't post it here even if I did.

I find this interesting considering my phone # is unlisted. This tells me some company I am using/have used has sold my info.

Anyone else been spammed like this? (not counting telemarketers.)

    Hey,

I have gotten phone calls before on my cell phone telling me to visit certain websites. I used to have a number that you could call and ask to be removed but for the life of me I can not find it. Maybe do a Google search and see if you can find the number to be removed from the lists.

    Hope that helps...

Yeah I am on the national "do not call" registry but I am sure if someone is going to spam people they aren't going to care about abiding by that.

Next thing you know they'll start going door to door...

Did you just buy a application recent that asked for a phone number ? it seems the norm at the moment for some of the popular items to sell you the bee's knees then phone you up wanting to then sell you the honey, but hurry there are limited spots left, and you tell us what you want to earn and we will price it up for you, and would you like fries to go with that as well.

I pay all my bills online (phone, power, insurance etc) and naturally they have my phone number.

If I buy something online that requires a phone number I always give a 555-xxxx type number - I don't give out my real phone number.

That is why I can't figure how they got my number. I may have let one slip by and forget to use a phony number but I don't remember it.

Lucky for me I have a nifty phone system that runs through my computer that allows me to block any call from anywhere. If I get a call I don't like I can block by name, phone number, range of phone number, area code, state etc.

I have blocked a ton of states and every "toll free call". I don't know people in many states and a toll free call is usually a telemarketer.

I guess I could've saved their number and started to spam them back...

Hi Mike - YES I have been spammed by every-which-way, including the recorded biz-opp calls to my cell phone. It would be great to be able to block the bozos!

I am interested in what type of phone system you use that will let you block calls? That would be very useful, as I have ATT cell as well as Qwest home service - and I don't think either will let me block calls.

    Thanks,
    Maury

      Heya Maury,

I use Ascendis Caller ID (no aff link).

You need to have caller id from your phone company.

Just install the software, hook a phone line to your computer modem and you are all set. If you want the call you don't have to do anything - you just add numbers etc that you want to block.

When someone you blocked calls you will hear one ring and the computer will automatically hang up on them.

You only need to run one phone line to your computer and it will work regardless of how many phones you have at home.

This does not work on cell phones.

      Good luck!

Some of them use an autodialer to just call sequentually - 521-0001, 521-0002, 521-0003, etc. It is quite possible nobody has given out your number for you to receive these calls.

Many times I have received an automated call to the main phone number at my office, then throughout the day the other lines (unlisted) get the same call.

    It's just a robot.

      Hi Don,

I hadn't considered the robot angle. If they are calling like that they must run up a helluva phone bill.

I am always being spammed on my cell phone and my fax line, I don't know how to stop it. I got a new fax number last year and it wasn't long before the spam faxes started up again.

You might try an eFax number - they have paid as well as free fax numbers. If you get spammed on one of their numbers they investigate and will try to put a stop to it. Plus, you can download and look at what the fax says, then it's your choice whether to print it out or not - so you can trash it without wasting printer resources.

      Hope that helps.

P.S. Thanks Mike for the info on your phone software. I'm going to look into that.

Yeah I have gotten a few of these just recently all I do now is hit DELETE. But hhmmm since I am on that do not call list I wonder if they are in violation of that and can be sighted for it. Anyways its a real pain anyone doing this currently don't waste your time. People hate spam online but when you start calling their phone with spam oh boy you just really pissed that person off.

I am also listed on something similar to the "do not call" register here in UK and these days I am getting more and more of these and they show as International. I guess its a way of them getting around the laws, spam from abroad and most of the one I get are mainly related to debt management. Whoever told them I was in debt

Re: Spending a lot on phone call spam

All you really need is a handful of residential phone accounts with unlimited long distance. Hook them up to your robo-dialer, and let them have at it. Some of the dialers will even let you randomize the intervals between calls so the phone company doesn't cop to the idea of you using a residential line for commercial purposes.

Edit: Larry Lee posted at the same time I did. Using VoIP makes even more sense nowadays. My involvement with bulk calling was before the widespread availability of things like Magic Jack...

Re: the "Do Not Call" list

This list is a joke, for the most part. Telemarketers are only required to clean their lists against this list twice a year. Many of them choose December 31 and January 1. This gives them a year to enjoy a loophole in the flawed law.

If one were to simply move offshore and ignore the various laws, the DNC lists would be a heck of a free resource, kindly provided by your federal governments.

Not too long ago, somebody had the smart idea (smart for them...annoying for everyone else) to make a network marketing opportunity out of automatic dialers complete with leads. They tell people you can use this to easily get people to visit your website or call you.

As a result, there is a huge increase in the number of people using these annoying automated telemarketing strategies.

If you have ever submitted your information to any lead generation website, "make money" or otherwise, chances are your number is being sold again and again to people using these systems.

I believe there is a time limit on how long after you submit your contact information, that anyone is allowed to contact you despite being on the Do Not Call list, but I am not sure what it is.

What annoys me most is when I receive text messaging spam. I don't have a text plan, so these spammers are costing me money every time they send their annoying messages.

I am sure they use a Voice IP like "Magic Jack" that cost them
close to nothing for any long distance calls.

I get spammed all the time by credit card companies. Where do they get my phone number? I have no idea but I imagine my bank shares details with other credit institutes.

I haven't had any cell phone calls/messages yet (knock on wood)...

well, maybe the question should be: Who never got spam phone calls? I got them everyday, even though I asked to remove my # and add to no-call-list.

however, one interesting thing is: one company/agency calls me everyday early in the morning. somehow, it becomes my wakeup call,

You will start getting SMS on your cell real soon. Many marketers are starting to find companies that will send out there messages to hte list they provide. That is the loop hole you see.... You gave your number to a company and did not UNcheck the box so it gave them your permission.

As I posted on another thread, I have the ability to send out SMS for anyone that needs this. I just have not made the interface user friendly YET to send it to the WSO threads.... LOL I will soon enough!

So if I only call 1000 people each day I might have 1 unique visitor to my site daily?

Somehow this just doesn't sound like an effective strategy to me. Ever wonder if some of these "bright ideas" are tried only because someone said "this works" and everyone using the method thinks he is the only one not getting results?

Do you know of anyone who rushed to his computer to pull up the site as a result of such a phone call?

      weird stuff

    Hi guys

ive had this a few times now and most of the time its when ive ordered something and ive had to provide my telephone number a few months later the calls would start with related products and it annoys the hell out of me.

The one that used to annoy me the most was when i lived in the uk the grief they would give you to sign up for their insurance/extended warranty and if you said no they would spend a year harrassing you!

    kind regards

Hate to rain on everyone's rant but when you opened that checking account at the bank and didn't really read the fine print, the free download from the uber guru, gave your email to Radio shack,...you agreed to it.

Many of those fine prints state that they have the right to sell your information to another company and that you could be contacted by that "other" company.

When it's your bank you just tell them to stop sending you stuff or stop calling you. Then they sell your information to someone that you didn't tell to stop calling you.

Unfortunately, if you decide that you do not agree to the terms at the bank you don't get that checking account you need, or that free ebook, video from the super guru...

You guys should look at the privacy statement that Tony Robbins uses.
