Marketers SHOULD Complain About Marketing

There's been a tendency as of late for people, whenever some mentions they don't like a certain marketing technique, to bust people's chops for being a marketer and complaining about being marketed to.

Which just doesn't make any sense.

For one thing, it implies that anything goes in terms of marketing, that any technique is okay. And that just isn't true.

But even more importantly, we should complain. If not us, then who? The majority of people who don't know a blessed thing about marketing?

We should be talking about what we like, what we don't. We should be talking about what works, what doesn't.

There are lots of newbies here (and that includes me) and if they don't read here what works and what just annoys people, then they're not going to know what they maybe shouldn't do.

If we don't talk about what kind of marketing we like and we think works, then we're going to spawn generation after generation of people using ham handed techniques that give all of us a bad name.

There's value to be had in learning why somebody does something that annoys. Pissed that you're being offered a million upsells? Maybe they know something you don't. You might not like it even after you find out why, but at least you'll have a clearer idea of what is right for you.

So complain. It's good for you.

I like your attitude about that. I agree with you.

Thanks for posting an honest opinion of yours that wasn't BS or ignorant. I truly appreciate the fact your headline was accurate to your post. Nothing annoys me more than BS headlines on WF that waste my time.

    Cheers,

      Thanks!

Taking my own advice - man, I don't like misleading headlines either. I don't mind if they're clever and make you wonder what the heck the poster is talking about, but titles that are flat out misleading are just irritating.

Always nice to talk to another Justin...

Here's my view on the ongoing argument you are talking about.
Most people that complain about the upsells are not the target
audience of the upsale. That's why they didn't buy and feel
    annoyed by the process.

However, the people that did buy LOVED the chance to get more
of the stuff they were buying. The chance to get a little closer
to their guru. The chance to collect more of what they love.

Certain people in their buying mode like to buy up as much as they
can get of the item they are purchasing. Try this out on a fifth
grader with Pokemon cards! The fifth grader doesn't just want the
one pack they want it all because they are obsessed with the topic.

The dirty part is that some of these non-buyers come back here
telling people how bad it is just because the offer wasn't for them
and now some rookie never does an upsell process. Thinking that
upsells are evil. Who are we to take that money from them?

Also from the view of the business owner I don't care about all
the people who are saying no. I can't possibly handle every single
customer in a market. I only want the people saying yes. That's
why a salesman makes 100 phone calls to make one sale.

If that salesman looked at his results the way most people talk
about the upsell process. Then technically he should never make
calls again because most people say no to him over the phone.

Personally, I have tried both routes and found that having upsells
is the better way to go. My core customers love the extra content
and value. They love being in that "platinum" club getting something
    more special then the "bronzes."

If my product is good and helpful to the world then it is my responsibility
to get it into the hands of as many peoples as I can. If a free offer
with a bazillion upsells is the best way for me to do that then thats what
    I have to do.
