I know I'm missing something....

Why is it that I show at #4 on the first page of google when I search for one of my websites but when I search using yahoo I'm not even in the first ten pages?

Hehe...at least it is in that direction!

Most people see the same types of differences between the two engines...I sure do.

I'd be interested to hear others' ideas on why, when Google loves a site, Yahoo may not.

I have my own ideas, but they involve doing things that could hurt Google rankings.

They use totally different methods of ranking pages and it could be that Google is faster at indexing. Ranking for Google will generally get you ranked in other search engines as well, but to really get ranked in each you need to find out what works on each and tweek for that engine.

Hmmmm...back to the drawing board then. LOL. Actually for this site I was just doing some basic article marketing and was hanging around page 2 on google until a few days ago when I started to do some aggressive blog commenting (not spamming , my comments are on topic and actually make sense). And when I checked today I was sitting on the first page.

I always find that Yahoo is a lot slower to index and rank my sites but in the long run, I usually rank better over there. But it takes a couple of months for them to catch up.

It's just different algorithms. That's all there is to it. Your content is going to be treated differently. Your backlinks are going to be weighed differently. Also, what I've noticed in my case is that Yahoo is notoriously slow to give me good rankings.

I have several sites where I rank in the top 10 in google for heavily searched keywords, and I nowhere to be seen in Yahoo for them. It's just the way it is. Who knows....if I used different backlinks, it would be the other way around. But I am much happier being in the top 10 for Google, not Yahoo.

Yahoo is definitely slower at recognizing new backlinks, and consequently rankings.
Make sure your keywords are in the <title> tags on your site as yahoo gives significant weight to this in terms of rankings.
Be patient... and focus on google rankings imo. Yahoo and bing rankings will follow.

Good point....I'd rather be in the top ten for google than the other search engines as well.

    Thanks everyone for their responses!

I wouldn't throw the towel in or drastically change what you are doing. Google has by far the largest market share, and if you are doing something that works for them, that's great.

I've found, especially with new sites, that yahoo lags behind, and it certainly is possible you will improve in yahoo by just continuing to do what you are doing now.
