Do You Work More On Your IM Business Than...

Do you work more on your IM business than you did at your last (or current) day job? I only worked 40 hours a week at my last day job - and I've never sat down and contemplated how much harder I work on my IM projects (until now). In any given week I may work up to 90 hours because there is always something to do. One more site to setup, one more email to write, an article to write...

But then again, I just took a few minutes off writing this and will consider it as work since I haven't left the computer.

So what about you? Do you work 8 hours a day and then stop? Do you go until your eyes hurt and your head is spinning?

I'm curious to know how my fellow IM buddies operate...

8 hours a day, my wife takes the computer if she decides I need a break :-) (not kidding, she's hid it before)

haha that's great. Umm I used to work until my eyes burned. Like I would tell myself that I was gonna accomplish a certain thing. Then once I finish it I just keep going further and further unable to stop. However I realized that when I do that it make it harder for me to stick with one method so I have been planning my day out and once I am done I have to force myself to get up and walk away from work.

Tip - concentrate on what is REALLY important and leads to making income.

There are so many "nice" things to do, or "necessary" things to do that eat up so much time, that don't bring home the bacon.

Over time, one learns what is really important to do.

Another reason why people often spend more time on IM than a job is because it is a challenge, fun and potentially very rewarding at times.

I do outsource, but I have a new business that just launched, I was working about 2 hours a day. Everyone should outsource, it's good for you

Wow, that one made me smile a bit. Makes me glad my girlfriend hasn't moved in yet!

Ah yes, I do outsource a lot of work. But with every project I build the structure myself, I may not actually pick up the rocks and carry them but I am always there putting the pieces together and making sure everything runs smoothly.

I find that everything I do is really important. Some of my projects don't make as much as others but I don't find that out until I've set them up and spent a lot of time on them. I wish I could just look at an idea and say "hey thats worth it" or "no way" but I never know until I try!

I agree that IM is both challenging and rewarding - thats why I stuck with it!

      Good replies so far!

Sometimes I do, but it's by choice not because I have to.

Oh you are so right about there always being 'one more thing' that needs to be done in IM. It never stops! But I am a firm believer that you do have to limit your working hours. You need to spend time with loved ones, but on top of that you need to spend time working on yourself (health, spiritually etc.)

I was just thinking about this today! I work 10 times as hard (and probably 10 times as much!) as I ever did working a job...but I also earn 10 times as much and I'm having a million times more fun!! I work like crazy only because I love it so much and keep getting new ideas and am seeing results...so its really hard to call it work when I get to chill with my computer watching movies all day long!

You could say that just about everything I do online is related to my home business. Even when I post on non business forums, I have my web address in my sig so I am constantly advertising and attempting to drum up business. Even on Myspace, Twitter and Facebook my primary aim is to make money.

I have alot of fun doing this as its my passion and to some extent I feel its my purpose. So its hard to tell the difference whether I'm hard at work or hardly working sometimes.

Its important to remember working in IM can be much different than working a "regular" job. For example, I do CPA marketing and a lot of my time is spent thinking about new ideas and new trends and is just good ol fun. So if I'm brainstorming for an hour, its a lot different than say crunching numbers as an accountant.

Very important to outsource what you can, not just so you have more free time, but more importantly so you can optimize your time on profit making activity.

In all, probably the same amount of time, but a lot more fun and a lot more lucrative.

A lot of good points here. I always feel like not working that extra hour is allowing someone else to get one step ahead of me. It's important to find that right balance between work and down time though.

  • I guess I am understand why you (or we) spend more time in IM. It is like your own business and you are your own boss; and you are no more paid by the hour type. Also, when you work hard and achieve the result, you get the sense of satisfaction which drive you to work harder as you raise your bar higher. In a way, it becomes addictive but it is a good addiction with continuous inflow of money. Right?

Happy work hard. You can stop if you want. Just pull the brake...you are your own boss.

I guess it all depends which stage you are at. I remember, when I was just starting my IM business, I was working like 16 hours a day. I needed to get to some level.... but now that i have mastered some skills, I am more relaxed. But generally, I work more hours than I used to work at my day job, only that I decide on when I work these hours. The good thing is, I am there for my 2 year old son when he needs me.

That said, It is a good thing to set goals for each day, each week, each month etc. It feels good to know you have accomplished something other than working every other minute.

You may feel like this because you didn't set an end goal to your IM efforts.
Once things start becoming repetitive, it should be outsourced.

And learn from the Pareto rule, 80% of your income comes from 20% of your efforts. Identify the 20% and you will work less, but won't have a significant drop in earnings.

    Hope you understand that.
