Big Corp Goes With Flash Forums

There is an ongoing, and very interesting marketing 'experiment' over at HBO. They have converted their forums, and website, entirely into Flash.

I didn't know Flash could be used to create a forum, but there it is:

HBO.COM - HBO: Big Love: Homepage

Is this what websites of the future will adopt to providing a more multimedia experience? I sure hope not.

So far, HBO is justifiably getting crucified on their forums.

Let me cast the first vote for leaving the WF as an easy to use, easy to read, fast, and fun forum with customized names, ability to copy, quote text, include prior comments, move from page to page, etc.

    oooo flashy..
I used to do flash development myself.
But when I realized that Google had a hard time ranking these sites and it's accessibility is low I only used flash for media highlights.

Although I'm really loving Flex and it's abilities to produce flash based applications.

I'm a believer in function over format.

It does look kind of nice but hard to navigate.

I'm sure it cost quite a bit too.

    Yes Flex is very nice.

It's great for diagrams, charts and things like that.

You can do some really nice things with it.

All I hear is my CPU fan cranking at full throttle when visiting the site. What a CPU hog those sites are. All looks, poor functionality. Or maybe I just need a new PC :-)

    I'm thinking.. what's the point?

No back button, crappy scroll (one scroll bar is enough for me), no copy & paste, in terms of usability.. it's a nightmare.

When used like this Flash doesn't add any value to the site, in fact it takes value away.

Damn does it take long to load = not too impressive.

I would've X'd out already had I not been so curious to see how it looks...

I wonder what advantage they see in using flash???

One of the things I never liked about flash sites in general is that the designers don't care to follow web conventions, which makes them usually hard to understand and navigate.

They've planned so well for the new forum that the date on the post titled
"In Response to Your Feedback" is dated February 15, 2020
