What is involved in IM?

Learning IM I am wondering what exactly is involved. So I wanted to ask the pros. Once I know what is needed, I can use the list when ever I am confused or overwhelmed.

For example.

Creation
Creating sites
Adding content
Designing banners/graphics/adds

Traffic
Creating articles
Creating videos
SEO
List building
Social media marketing

Other
Testing, testing, testing
Working hard
Focus
Determination
Action plan
Outsourcing

I realize it depends on what the goal is.
It's by no means a complete list, would anyone be kind enough to add to it?
