Question on creating my website

I have progressed very well so far thanks to some of the wonderful people here who gave me clear guidance and I have followed their advice until this point.

Now, my next step is to create my website.
Imagine you are sitting next to me and I asked you these questions. With that in mind, tell me, step 1 - do this, step 2 - do this.

My Goal:

To post the contents for my home page at, let's say "mywebsite.com" (My goal is to make my site content-rich website, where I want to have an home page, separate directory for blog, articles, etc.,)

What I have ready:

I wrote contents based on my domain name keyword for home page.
I also have contents for posting on my blog.
I got my domain name.
I have my hosting with hostgator.
I have signed up with aweber.

What I want to know:

How to find a template for my website?
Once I find it, how to upload contents from my MAC computer to my home page?
How to upload my blog contents to my homepage/blog/ subdirectory?
What tools/software are required to do this?

That's it.

I appreciate your response.

Much obliged,
Isa.

    Hello Isa,

    1) What CMS (Content Management System) are you using? If you are using Wordpress, just google "free wordpress templates" and you will find plenty of them. If not, just replace "wordpress" with your CMS, and you are done, or you can tell us what you use so we can help you better. If you are not using a CMS but a normal website, you should look for a web designer (or hire me ).

    2) If you web hosting account has Cpanel, you can do that from yourwebsite.com/cpanel. If not, use this: FileZilla - Client Download

    3) Same as above, either with Cpanel or FileZilla.

    4) Nothing special, really, just FileZilla if you can't/don't want to use Cpanel.

There are lots of template sites offering static HTML templates, Wordpress templates, Joomla templates, and just about any other kind of template you could want. You an also design your own if you're willing to take a little time to learn, it isn't that hard.

As for getting your "stuff" to your host, you can probably upload it through your control panel, but I'd recommend getting an FTP program and learning how to use it. They're not hard to use, and they are faster than using your control panel. I don't use a Mac, but you can probably find several free FTP programs via a Google search or shareware site.

One of my favorite sites for themes is WordPress Themes, HTML Templates - ThemeForest - they're not free, but they're pretty cheap, and they've got some great themes - Wordpress, CSS, HTML, Joomla, etc.

I would use CMS wordpress for sure. It is super easy to understand and install. You can just copy and paste all of your content into different pages and schedule regular blog postings based off of pre written content. You can easily optimize and there is infinite themes you can use. Most that are good themes are not free but it is again a business investment for you. So there are tons of how to videos on you tube for how to upload wordpress and add your pages and content. You could start there if you do not know how to fully use it. I find video the fastest way to learn new things.

    Hey man,

I'm on a mac and I use Dreamweaver. A pretty cool programme, with loads of website templates already set up. However, it does cost a few dollars to buy...

If your looking for a free webpage designer, check out iWeb - this should already be on your Apple Mac if its a relatively new computer (check your applications folder) - its got some really nice web page template - and its dead easy to use

    All the best

Wow, many responses, just got back from my full time job. Thanks much.

Okay, based on your answers, I am overwhelmed. What is CMS (content management system), means?

Can I use Wordpress but make my website static and not look like only a blog website.

What I want is my main index page and then another subdirectory like blog and in it want to upload blog posts. I am slowly getting familiarized with the IM jargon, so I am confused. But, I am patient and want to learn step by step.

By the by, Dreamweaver is really expensive, not right now, I want to do myself and learn, later on, may be spend some money and buy tools.

      Thanks,
      Isa.
