Is Avast blocking your email? Here's the fix.

It seems like a lot of people are having trouble with the latest version of Avast, the free virus checking software. Suddenly, Avast is blocking access to POP and IMAP email accounts.

If you're having this problem, here's the fix:

1. Open Avast

2. Click on 'Settings' (upper right corner of page)

3. Click on 'Troubleshooting'

4. Click on 'Redirect Settings'

5. Clear all the port #'s from each field

6. Check 'Ignore Local Communication'

7. Click 'OK'

8. Close Avast

Problem solved!

Wouldn't it be nice if all of life's problems were that easy to solve?

      Thanks for this help.

But it's weird that I don't have this problem and I just had a database update about 30 minutes ago. Hmmmmmm. Will have to monitor it and see if begins to happen.

It was the software version update, not the database update. And not everyone has experienced the problem. But for those who have been, it's a nightmare. Especially if your email client doesn't recognize that it's being blocked. It just looks like you're not getting mail.

I have the 4.8 Home Edition ... I haven't gotten any messages in any way that there has been any updates ... what is the latest version?

And thanks for the clarification between software and database updates - my mind didn't differentiate between the two at the time I originally read your post.

I'm running 5.0.418. Open Avast and your version and expiration date are right on the main summary screen.

    Hello Lisa

Thanks for sharing this information regarding Avast and their blocking of some e-mails.

I use this service and find it to be the best in virus protection.

Have tried several of the other paid for services and each of them have fell short of expectations and caused me problems.

I really appreciate the information on this update.

This will make life a lot easier for me and others.

Thanks for the update. While the problem hasn't occurred yet (for me), if it does occur you've just saved me a lot of diagnostic time.

Like Ron, I've been a happy Avast user (switched from AVG). The latest version of Avast has a much better interface than previous versions.

    Hello,
This is an official Avast Support. In fact tis IS NOT a solution. All you did is turned off the email checking. Emails are bypassing MailShield in avast.
In 99% cases it is wrong configuration of email client or mailshield
The true sollution can be found in this article
    ----
    go to:
    support.avast.com
enter in the search box following phrase: "mail shield"
find article "avast! 5.x: Some e-mails are not scanned by the Mail Shield"
    read it

Mostly, the problems in life are hard to solve just until we find the right answer and As everything in life, it was very hard for me to fix my email problem and then I've got the answer and now it is easy as easy can be.

Wasn's expecting to see an AVAST fix on the WF. I didn't have the time or patience to figure out the problem and just removed the whole friggin thing. I will have to try your fix and see if it solves the issue. Thx

avast! blocking email SMTP port 80 Redirector Settings:

By clearing these Redirector settings, you are effectively disabling the webshield and the mailshield (equivalent to turning them off) The correct solution in such a case, where SMTP is indeed running on HTTP port 80, is to add the IP address to the ignore list (in the same settings page). This will result in this particular SMTP server being ignored, while still having your web shield and mail shield functional. Our case involved "SMTPout.SecureServer.net" which is a relay server for several ISPs, including GoDaddy. I used the IP address 64.202.165.58 and inserted into "Ignored Addresses:" under the Web and Mail catagories both.

Just one BIG problem with your remedy.
    It's ONLY suitable Windows systems.
The Mac Avast program has none of those preference options you stated.
