Pop Up Email Captures - Yes or No?

I have a site that I like lots of repeat visitors. I tend to find pop up email captures annoying but wonder how everyone else feels about it.

Do you use them?

Also does aweber provide these?

I think your first sentence is missing some words, so it's kinda hard to figure out what you are asking.

However, on the email popups being annoying. As soon I get a pop up, i click off and never consider going to that site again.

As far as aweber goes, here's a link to their faq on pop ups - it looks like they do have them available for people to create - not sure if they have a std pop up, cuz I don't use them.

after i did that search I saw some other links which may change my mind:

or at least try a split test to get my own real world results, which in the end, are the only results that matter...

Just give it a test for a week. I think you'll be happy with the results.

I don't like them...but my results were just too much better than without it. I would suggest testing them as well.

  • I dont know whether that will annoy your visitors, but fly-in opt in forms do work if there's a nice design and bribe on them.

Yes, AWeber has got them and they're called lightboxes. You can choose the option 'lightbox' when you're in the section on 'designing your form'.

The results speak for themselves, try it out for 4 weeks and see how much more opt-ins you will get with a lightbox script instead of a normal sign up box. People always have the option to close the window if they don't wan to sign up.

If you have a lot of repeat visitors, Aweber has an option of showing the lightbox every visit, every 5th visit, only the first visit, etc. So you can choose that your repeat visitors only see the sign up box at certain times.

      Hope this helps!

They may work, but I absolutely hate them. I go to your site, your copy is interesting enough that I start reading, you're on a roll, I'm a potential customer, then... THERE IT IS. The flying in, floating whatever pop-up obscuring the text and stopping me in my tracks. Yeah, there's usually a close or exit button, but it's often "strategically" camouflaged, and I get tired of the hide and seek game.

So the path of least resistance is to close the window and forget all about you. I have to be super-interested in what you're offering to close your pop-up and keep reading.

I'm sure there are statistics detailing the benefits of pop-ups, but are there any that quantify the number of potential new and repeat customers you lose by employing this tactic?

They can be really annoying but they do work. Like everyone said on here, test it out for a few weeks and see what type of results that you get.

I love them!! I also use them for many other sites not related to IM

You can set it to only show the pop up once or every 5 days or whenever you like in Aweber.

I normally set mine to display once then have an optin in teh sidebar and this is working very well for me at the moment

    Good luck

It depends how intrusive they are. I hate when they pop up just as you start reading and it blocks your view. Some popups don't work properly. They sit on the page and move with the page when you scroll, so you can't even see the entire form.

Lightboxes are neat and are probably the least problematic for me, especially if they are easy to turn off.

I can't remember the details now, but once I came across a popup that was very unusual. It wasn't your lightbox or a simple box with optin form. It was much more visually pleasing. I wish I could remember the specifics. All I know is that I actually enjoyed the fact that it popped up.

Also, you have to realize that some popups can be blocked right in people's browsers so they are never seen. So you will want to make sure that whichever type you choose cannot be blocked.

If you come across that unique one, I'm sure your visitors will be more than happy to sign up just because the optin window is so good.

How often do you have yours display Danny?

Well this is my first day with aweber. I made an email opt in, put it on my site.Works great. I figured out to put that in a widget on the side.

Where does the code for the Popover email go? Does it go in the index.php?

        Thanks

It depends on whether your site has lots of returning visitors or not.

If you do! Then, I would suggest that you don't use them, simply because you'll be putting off your loyal visitors.

However, if your traffic is mainly made up of newcomers, then you'd rather try every means at hand to grab their contact info before they leave for good.

    Test, test, test!

The best thing I learnt about IM is to test every idea that pops up into mind. And after checking the result, I decide on whether to carry on with it or just abandon it for another one.

They work pretty good for us with cheap adult traffic but they do hurt conversions. So far it take 10 days to recoup the loss with our auto responder series. After that though it's all profit.

I was wondering if anyone has any other options for capture software. We are currently using one that pops up in the center with the rest of the screen faded out. I'd like to test something like this: copywritinggrabbag.com that slowy comes in from the side. Anyone know where we can get something like that?
