Need Urgent Help With Text Editor!

What I want is a text editor which can cut off an article after a given number of characters. Meaning that let's say if I only want to get the first 500 characters then it should remove all the remaining one's.

Let's say the sample article is

It's a simple utility that I want and I've been searching for something like this for more than 24 hours and simply couldn't find it!

    Character count can be easily done using a program like open office but what I want is that the editor must automatically cut off the article at the character length that I specify. Hope that makes sense.

    I take it you want the editor not to allow further key entries after the number of characters you specify. I dont know if such a tool exists. But I remember I found a macro somewhere that counts words as you type in Word when I was in similar situation before. If you search for it you will probably find it.
    I would really appreciate a tool (like Text editor) for doing this.

    The macro that you're talking about, is it for Open office or Microsoft office? Is it open source? ANy luck with name so I may search in Google?

      Word shows you the word count in the lower left corner automatically.
      Google Docs also has a word count feature.

    I'm not just looking for the word count feature but rather I want the tool to cut off the text after a particular number of characters that I'll specify
