Any experiences with self hosted autoresponders? (aweber alternatives?)

Hi,

Just wanted to ask people who are using self hosted autoresponders like phplist

is it good to use? Can you please offer a comparison on feature list...

Aweber vs Free ones? like PHPlist

Also please share if you have used any other free list building software in the past and your experiences (size of list, email sending capabilities etc)

I tried one once, years and years ago. My list was hacked and spammed. It's a good way to lose your hosting account if you ask me.

The big advantage to open source programs is the opportunity for development by a large community. The disadvantage is that the same source code is available to the bad guys.

I've used Listmail Pro since it came out. Other than the fact that it isn't free, about the only negative I've experienced is the requirement to throttle delivery rates on large lists. For example, Hostgator limits you to 2,000 emails per hour. For small lists, that's not a problem. Nor is it a problem if your message is not time-critical. If you do send that kind of email (like webinar start reminders to a big list), stick to one of the services like aweber.

I used one years ago - can't remember which one.

The problem I had was poor delivery. Most web hosts will only let you send out 100 or so emails at once Ishared hosting) which is not widely known.

Which brought aboout the other problem. I had to transfer my subsctibers to Aweber. I lost 80% of them because they had to re-opt in.

IMHO you should just spend the $20 a month and avoid the hassle.

Please do a forum search as this is already covered.

In the meantime - STAY AWAY! If you are truly building a business you have to have the proper tools. Look at virtually every single successful internet marketer and they are with probably 1 of 3: aweber, icontact or getresponse (I know there are other good ones as well).

In addition to the problems already mentioned by previous posters (undeliverable, hacking) you have a legal issue as it relates to how the person opt-ins and spam compliance.

my advice - spend the money - get a proven solution.

Since they are coming off your server you need to be careful and not get your server stuck on a black list. That will honestly kill you. Just like with hosting your better off outsourcing it then running one from your own home. Outsource your list building to sites like AWeber High cost or TrafficWave one low monthly fee.
