How To Do Keyword Research

Keyword Research. Root of Success.

When it comes to going down any IM Road, I think that the root emphasis should be based on keyword research. This is what will set you up for the traffic; if you get this right, everything else should just fall into place.

Your ideal outcome is to go for those keywords that have some decent searches, but carry competition that can easily be dominated!

Most of us all know that once we have the keyword, we have to go on a back-linking adventure, along with some unique content. This is the easiest strategy to get ranked, for what you are chasing after.

So this is not new information, everyone knows we should pick up keywords that fit these variables?

But, most people do not know how to carry this out.

Remember, this tutorial is going to be for people who do not have the money to buy tools that will do it for them.

Step 1.

You need to look at your niche you have chosen. Now get the root keyword of your niche, and head over to Google Keyword Tool, and put it in. In this example, I have entered 'weight loss pills'.

{Please check attached Image 1}

In this example, I am looking to promote a CPA offer (usually the trial kind, that get you $30-$40 per lead).

From this I can straight away see a potential keyword:

"herbal weight loss pills".

Ignore the bar that shows how much competitor volume there is. What we are going to do, is take that keyword, and do a Google search for it, in quotes:

"herbal weight loss pills"

{Please check attached Image 2}

This will subsequently bring up the competing pages.

A good rule of thumb is to say that any keyword that carries 50,000 or less competition, can easily be dominated in a few days of link building. I have tried this strategy many times, and it works like a charm for less than 50,000 comp!

This particular keyword has around 36,000 competing pages.

Ok, so this keyword gets around 100 searches a day. (You can work this out from the global search volume number). It's not the most, but you will get some traffic. If you keep doing this, then you can build up a mini army of keywords.

Note: I have double checked the keyword 'herbal weight loss pills' with software too, and it gives the figures we want. It shows that it is easily competable.

Step 2.

Now you have a solid foundation, create a Wordpress blog. Buy a suitable domain. See if you can get the keyword in it, if not, something generic will do.

Install Wordpress using the fantastico function on your cPanel.

At this stage, I would personally use a premium wordpress theme. However, you can use whatever you want! I would also customise the theme using photoshop, but once again it is not essential.

Once you have the blog up and running, you would want some unique content on it, some with your keywords! i.e. at least one article named: 'Herbal Weight Loss Pills'. On your site, make sure you have relevant CPA offers.

I would now carry out a back-linking process along with article submissions to directories. You need to target your keyword(s) here.

You should hopefully see your site ranking in a few days now!

Now it's time to enjoy the traffic, and build more of these assets..

Summary.

If you have software, it will do it for you. If not, then do it this way, it works!

    Hello Isha,

Another good post. Thanks for sharing, not all of us have the software to do this. Being still wet behind the ears any info is appreciated, especially since I started to figure out how Wordpress works with all its features, ie changing tenplates, finding spam free themes, it is a big hill out there to climb. Your input is appreciated on this forum.

    Thanks Isha,

Yes Photoshop is something I have played around with, a while back, but would love to be more comfortable with it. As far as Wordpress, I started with it 2 days ago while having some down time at work, I was able to set it up using Fantistico using Hostgator, I was able to do it so yeah!. I had problems upload new tenplates, so instead I downloaded themes directly from Wordpress it worked, but would like to know why I have had trouble uploading the files to my Wordpress Admin.

I noticed that in your images that those traffic stats were for broad match. I think if you really want to get a more granular number, then you should change that match type to exact match.

Broad Match will pull will include any of these search phrases: weight loss pills, pills weight loss, pills loss weight. So the numbers will be a lot higher.

I have a little different method when it comes to keyword research, because I have found that this is what works for me. I think that your method is very solid, and if you or anyone else is getting nice results with it, then by all means do it!

However, just to add to the conversation I want to tell you what has worked for me:

Go to a leading blog/website in your niche, and copy/paste the URL into the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Instead of searching by "descriptive words and phrases" search by website content. This will enable you to enter the exact website, and generate the keywords.

Often times Google will spit out a massive amount of keyword phrases that normally do not come up when doing keyword research the more "popular" way. I also make sure that I change the "match type" from broad to exact. I like to see exactly how many searches an exact keyword is getting each month.

As far as competition, I really do not do the whole "in quotes" thing. I have SEO Quake for FireFox, and I simply analyze the first 10 websites/blogs/articles for a particular keyword and try to determine if I can outrank them with quality content and an aggressive link-building campaign.

This is a method that has worked well for me, so I just want to pass it on!

Alright so my niche has 236,000 competing pages when I put the keyword phrase in quotes and less than 47,000 when I go down my keyword tree... I really need to rank well for the main keyword so am I going to fight like hell to break the first page?

Analyze the websites/articles/blogs that are ranking on the first page for your particular keyword phrase. It really does not matter how many "competing pages" you have, because in reality you are only competing with the first page results!

Look for articles, web 2.0, etc. that are ranking high, and then go to Yahoo Site Explorer and check the number of backlinks. Write good content, and build some dofollow backlinks and you have a good chance of ranking #1 for your main keyword.

Thanks for the tips. Finding dofollow seems to be so damn hard in my niche (fashion based), but it seems like the top site only has 800 backlinks or so in the site explorer. I'm feeling more confident of being able to at least get on this first page...

Yeah I hear ya. Finding dofollow blogs can be a pain. That is why I primarily outsource all of my link building. There are some really good WSO's regarding link building running right now. If the top website only has 800 backlinks, then you have a good change to outrank that website, provided you have quality keyword optimized content on your own website.

Don't forget to submit articles as well. You can backlink those as well and have multiple listings on the first page of Google for your keyword phrase

Yeah I did some article marketing and was really surprised how well it ranked. Also started a myspace to start generating traffic and it ranks higher than my own damn page. Kinda worried that was a bad idea...

I am not sure if this question is directed at me or the OP, but I will give my two cents on search volume

When looking at search volume you cannot go on the numbers alone. I have done that, and it is not the best way to succeed with keyword research. You have to put yourselves in the position of the buyer and decide what the intention is behind typing a particular keyword phrase into Google.

For example, if you were in the acne niche, the term "acne info" may get 5,000 searches per month (this is just an example, haven't actually done the research).

However, the term "natural cures for acne" may only get 1,000 searches per month. Many marketers would go for the first one because of more search volume, but it seems to me that many people tying in "acne info" are simply looking for free information.

The second keyword phrase seems to be much more likely to yield a sale. These people are looking for a cure, as opposed to just information. Never go by just the search volume. I have articles that rank for keywords with low search volume, but they convert like crazy because they keywords are super-targeted.

At the end of the day it is not about search volume, it is about the total number of sales you can make!

nice post isha. When doing the keywords make sure targeted like mentioned. A lot of people caught up in the broad terms that get major traffic but don't realize non targeted.

So if you sell dog food only, don't spend all day advertising pet food, targetd dog food and even break it down to city and or state if your local.

if you only sell dog food to chicago area people you wouldn't want to waste your time targeted broad terms you want chicago dog food or chicago pet store or even more targeted if you sell like with isha example health-maybe chicago nutritional dog food, you get the idea.

Also free google friendly press releases, articles, videos, and blogs can be huge positive backlinks and if you seo optimize correctly, you can achieve top rankings same day.

No matter what your doing online or offline..spend your time with targeted people only.

Great post Isha. Im still new, but is it really that easy to rank against the first page just doing this? I had a friend pull up this keyword "herbal weight loss pills" in market samurai aand at least 7 of them had Domain Age 9 or higher, Page ranking from 2-5 and on page backlinks somewhere in the avg. of 1500. Like I said, im still new, maybe these dont really matter because I see NONE of the sites with proper SEO, although a few are in the Yahoo directory and DMZ. Maybe someone can clear this up. Im probably a fool for bringing this up seeing as this was an example keyword D:

    Sorry!

The weight loss niche has an insane level of competition Anthony, a newbie would not be able to rank for the main keyword more than likely as the top runners would be aged with many back links and consumer awareness and even the lesser keywords would be optomised far better than most can do.

Lets face it, anyone can rank with any domain but it is unlikely anyone could go up against Amazon and win if they are setting up a worlds shopping mall for themselves.

Stick to smaller, more obscure niches and you should fare much better...how do you feel about llama sightseeing trips?
