This is really the place for a simple split test.

That said, testing different header graphics is worth thinking about.

My problem with most IM headers is that they are getting terribly formulaic. They're so generic that they are boring and scream out "BUY MY ---".

I think I will be testing a lot...

I have been writing copy today.. which sucks at the moment but I am sure I will get to grips with it soon

The lines of text (pre-headings I call them sometimes) that
occupy a top-left or top-right position are called "eyebrows".

Headers waste valuable real-estate if they're just showing off
graphics cliches. They can be used to do some real selling
though... but only usually when they have copywriting elements,
ie. WORDS, in them. If the words are in graphics they won't
be seen by those using some browsers however, so your
core message should be intelligible in pure HTML without the
graphics in the header or box shots and things like that.

If you've browsed the web on one of these little netbook machines
with a screen as small as 1024x600 pixels, you'd know that a
fat, artist-indulgent header can make your prospect not even
    see your headline below it.

That said, I work with graphics more and more these days and
they are definitely a key component to most direct-response
selling on the web and in print.

Haha I so know what you mean I was running my online business from a 10inch netbook while I was travelling some sites can be a real pain in the bum.

I think I will do a couple of landing pages and split test then roll from there

    I need a headline now

Test my friend. At the end of the day it's your words that should sell. The graphics add more professionalism to your website, in turn giving a little more credibility.

I have sites where headers ruin conversions, and I have sites where they raise conversions. Unfortunately, the only way to find out each time is to try both and compare the results.

Having said that, though, if I wasn't allowed to test, I'd have no header.

  • Test it, but in almost every test I've done in various niches selling self-help products (that's pretty much all I sell or write copy for) a header image has lower conversions. But...a more important question you may want to ask is video v. no video v. video+text v. video+alternate text option. Those options will probably have a higher impact on your conversions.

    Video is coming..... soon!

I think I am going to concentrate on the headline.... get that some where near then launch teh site then its split testing..

If you use a header you should think of the text and graphics you have in that header as your preheadline for the sales page.

Also the header should not be too deep.

You want the main focus of your prospects to be on the main headline on your sales page.

      Kindest regards,
