Wait to move domain names

Hello Warriors;

I have a quick question about domain names. I registered one at namecheap and want to transfer hosting to hostgator.

It says I have to wait 60 days to get the EPP Key. Have I got that right?

If so, can you suggest where to register a domain for cheap and be able to transfer right away.

Thanks ALOT!

    Hi,

You don't need to or in my opinion want to transfer your Domain Name to your registrar.

Simply set up the hosting account and point the DNS setting to your host.

If you need more info on how to do this just ask.

      Terri,

Alexa is right--there is a difference between actually transferring the Domain Name and simply pointing the DNS settings to another name server. The DNS settings just ensure that the page will display when you type in the correct URL (Universal Resource Locater) e.g. the DNS will associate the name with the correct IP address, in the web browser.

When you move the Domain Name transfer your name you're actually registering it with a different domain name seller. However, since you've likely paid for a full year with your current domain name seller there is no reason to re-register your name until the year is up.

I also agree with George--you don't want your domain name registered with your hosting company. Its better to keep them separate.

Network Solutions, a well-known and respected domain seller and it contains detailed instructions on how to point your website to a new DNS address.

All registrars require that you keep a domain with them for 60 days after registration.

But the keeping it with them for 60 days has nothing to do with hosting, just transferring the domain to another registrar, and most will let you move the domain to a different persons account within the same registrar within that time frame.

You can register a domain name at Namecheap and host it where ever you want. Just point the nameservers to your host. I don't recommend having your domains and hosting at the same place.

    Register at Namecheap
Get a hosting package with hostgator
Point your nameservers of the domains to hostgator.

    Hi all,

Got a PM to splane it a bit more however, by the time I got a round tuit everyone else above actually did it better than I could. . Bottom line when you register a URL the set up program walks you through the process.
