Getting maximum benefit from acquiring a website

Its my first post on this forum so a big hello to everyone out here.
Over the next few days, I intend to acquire a few small blogs and forums for the following reasons:
1. To get content for my new portal
2. To build up traffic quickly
I wanted to know what would be the best way to transfer the content and traffic from the acquired websites, so that I do not lose out on the visitors and get maximum benefit from that websites search engine position.
For e.g. if I acquire a PR3 website with content, put the content up on my website and simply re-direct the traffic from the domain to a page on my website (with a few seconds delay on a page that tells the users about the acquisition) what sort of benefit can I expect from that website's page rank. Is this the best way of going about this or is there a better way?
