Choose the right niche to make things MUCH EASIER.

Since getting involved in the internet marketing niche, I've gotten a ton of emails from new and "used" internet marketers that aren't seeing the results they want. They would like some answers as to why all their efforts are coming with no return.

One of the most common things I've seen with these marketers is their niche choice. The majority are involved in saturated or way too broad subjects. Make money at home, weight loss, dating, etc are all these niches. In no way am I saying these niches are not profitable. They are actually some of the most profitable niches available, but that comes with a price.

To become profitable in these niches, you have to build a true authority site. You have to usually put lots and lots of time in to creating something above the rest. I'm not saying to avoid this because this is really the goal you should be after, but for anyone not seeing results, the best thing that can happen for you is to see some results. With results, you can actually believe in what you are doing and develop a system to use. After you get some results, you can start focusing on the big money makers. I like to look at it as stepping stones.

Why not think of your niche choice like you choose your long tail keywords. You go for these long tail keywords because they are going to be easier to get people to actually see your material. The same principles could be applied to your overall niche choice so that it makes it much easier on you.

It all comes down to either narrowing down your market from the larger broader niches or choosing slightly obscure niches. As with long tail keywords, you might hit a ceiling when it comes to the amount of people you are going to reach, but it's going to be easier to reach them.

So instead of selling to those wanting to lose weight, sell to those wanting to lose man boobs or cellulite. To cure both of these, you are essentially just losing weight. You could promote the exact same product really. It comes down to presentation though. Focus your efforts on these smaller more targeted markets and you will see better results for your efforts and quicker. Make a whole website devoted to fixing just one of these issues. Publish all your articles, videos, and podcasts on this subject.

Or you can go with the obscure markets that just don't have much competition. There are lots and lots of these out there. Some don't even have products made for them yet. The "end of the world in 2012" market has been killing it since that movie came out last year.

You know which markets are profitable at first glance, but so does every other marketer. Dig deeper then the rest and you will find lots of easily conquerable markets. Research!

I agree that newbies should probably stay out of the "make money" niche since it isn't something they would be very credible about.

But as for competitive niches - I love 'em - that's where the money is. However, may tactic is to really attack a very narrow mini-niche within a niche, rinse and repeat.

In my experience with several info products and coaching lots of others, newbies can make just as many mistakes avoiding competitive niches as getting lost in them.

The answer is not avoiding competition, the idea is to get good at niche marketing - period!

You can compete in busy markets like IM, weight loss, Personal development, etc... IF you can target an insane desire and develop a results-based system to solve their problem.

The issue 99% of ebooks that come my way have (that are not successful) is not that they are getting lost because it's too competitive, it is that they are getting lost because they are badly positioned!

Instead of focusing on a result, they focus on informing or have such a weak value proposition that nobody will touch it with a 10-foot pole.

On the other hand, get good at finding highly emotional desires and then targeting them precisely with a big promise and you can compete in any market - especially the competitive ones.
